Possible solutions for Call of Duty – World at War graphics corruption and crashing problems

A few hours ago we reported how Call of Duty : World At War got leaked 3 days before the game’s official release date. Apparently a lot of people playing the pirated version are having problems with the game. I initially thought these were due to a bad crack from RELOADED but it seems like these are all in game glitches. So you may still encounter the issues even if you use the legitimate version of the game. Hopefully the following tips may help you resolve issues encountered with the game until a patch arrives.

Graphics corruption problems

One of the most common problems many users are experiencing with Call of Duty 5 seem to be graphics corruption (specially corrupted water graphics) issues; both nVIDIA and ATI GPU users have reported such problems. You can try doing the following if you encounter a similar error:

1. nVIDIA GPU users – upgrade to v 180.43 beta drivers.

ATI GPU users – Upgrade to ATI Catalyst 8.10 WHQL.

New drivers may not completely eliminate graphics corruption issues but they are known to reduce them. For example you will no longer have issues in some levels in the game.

2. Disable ‘Dual video cards’ in game option.

3. Disable anti aliasing. If you have forced anti aliasing from your video card’s control panel, set it to application controlled/automatic. Then disable AA from within the game as well.

4. Update DirectX to the latest monthly build. If you are playing the game on DirectX 9.0c under Windows XP, update to DirectX 9.0c November 2008 monthly build. You can download it from here.

Game not starting up or crashes at startup with error message

Many seem to be experiencing problems while trying to start up Call of Duty : World at War. The game either will not start or will crash to desktop with an error message similar to the one below:

‘Error during initialization – unhandled exception caught’

So far, I have only managed to find one culprit that causes this problem; the default audio format on your sound card.

default-format

If you set your sound card’s audio format to anything higher than 24 Bits, 48000 Hz, you may get that error message. Note that this is not an in-game setting. This setting should be changed from your audio card’s control panel (Realtek HD Audio Manager, etc).

You may also try updating your audio drivers to the latest available version. Also, update DirectX to the latest monthly build. If you are playing the game on DirectX 9.0c under Windows XP, update to DirectX 9.0c November 2008 monthly build. You can download it from here.
