3DP Chip 9.03 Beta 20 – Automatic driver updates downloader

We first posted about 3DP Chip about two months ago. Since then the article has been referred to in a number of our PC game troubleshooting posts – it’s been pretty damn useful. This is to inform you that a newer build of 3DP Chip is now available for download. For those of you who don’t know what it is, 3DP Chip is a software that can be used to automatically search for new driver updates for your motherboard, video card, sound card, Ethernet adapter and processor.

3dp chip 9.03

One of the best things about 3DP Chip is that it does not require an install – the application is portable and doesn’t install any unnecessary system files or startup entries. Just run the small 450kb executable and you will be presented with a list of hardware installed on your system. A single click on the ‘Driver’ button next to a specific device will present you the download link for the latest available driver update for that device. It’s pretty cool.

The official download page is not yet updated with 9.03 beta 20 release. You can however download this version from FIleForum.

NVIDIA GeForce ForceWare Drivers 182.08 Direct Download

I’m pretty impressed with the speed NVIDIA releases new driver updates. Whenever a major PC title hits the market, they release a new set of drivers that are aimed at minimizing problems with the latest release. Just after Empire:Total War was released, NVIDIA have released ForceWare drivers v182.08 (release 182) to the public. If you are playing ETW or any other new PC game, upgrading to 182.08 is recommended.

I’ve installed these drivers and tried playing Empire:Total War but I could not observe a noticeable performance gain over 182.06 drivers. Release notes for this version are given below:

New in Release 182.08:

  • Added support for GeForce GTS 250.
  • Added SLI profile support for some newly released games.
  • Additional information on specific bug fixes can be found in the release documentation notes.
  • Users without US English operating systems can select their language and download the International driver.

So maybe 182.08 does not include any performance enhancements over 182.06 at all? Only way to decide which version to keep is to try several drivers with a new PC title (that is optimized) and observe the results.

NVIDIA Geforce ForceWare 182.06 Drivers (WHQL) - Direct Download

NVIDIA have release a non-beta driver version after some time. Geforce ForceWare 182.06 (Release 182) drivers are compatible with GeForce 6, 7, 8, 9, and 200-series desktop GPUs and are WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) certified. In addition to OpenGL 3.0 support, these drivers also contain the latest version of NVIDIA PhysX System software. Direct download links for 32/64 bit driver versions for Windows Vista and XP can be found towards the end of this article.

Note that I’ve not had the time to test the new drivers with any of the games installed. However if you are playing newer titles such as FEAR 2 (up to 10% performance increase over ForceWare 181.22), Mirror’s Edge and Dawn of  War 2, v182.06 drivers are recommended.

nVIDIA PhysX System Software 9.09.0010 Download

nVIDIA’s PhysX System Software enables PhysX acceleration in all Geforce 8, 9 and GTX 200 series video cards. Version 9.0.0010 of this has just been released by nVIDIA and it supposedly fixes several crashing issues when running some games (including Mirror’s Edge) with PhysX acceleration enabled.

First of all you need to have an nVIDIA PhysX compatible video card to use this software (any Geforce 8, 9 and 200 series card will do). Also, you cannot directly install v9.09.0010 if you don’t already have an older version of PhysX installed. If this is the case, just install the latest ForceWare drivers with PhysX on your system and then install this version separately.

ForceWare 185.20 Beta Drivers – For Windows 7 Build 7000, Vista and XP (January 2009)

nVIDIA’s ForceWare version 185.20 beta drivers are now available for download. ForceWare 185.20 is the successor to previously released ForceWare 181.00 beta (with OpenGL 3.0) drivers. These drivers are compatible with Windows Vista 32-bit/64-bit as well as Windows XP 32-bit operating systems. The Vista version of ForceWare 185.20 driver is compatible with recently leaked Windows 7 Build 7000.

nvidia logo

I have tested these drivers both on Windows Vista as well as on Windows 7 Build 7000. The only games I could test were Grand Theft Auto 4 and Fallout 3. For me the performance on Windows XP was unchanged from my existing driver (ForceWare 180.84). However on Windows 7 Build 7000, I noticed a 3-5FPS increase with GTA 4. Note that these are still beta drivers and there is no guarantee that everyone will experience the same performance on their systems. If you are having problems with 185.20 drivers or simply want to read more user experiences, read this Guru3D forum thread.

RivaTuner 2.22 – Detect GPU temperature, Control fan speed, Overclock and change driver settings

A new version of RivaTuner has been released. RivaTuner is a small utility which you can use to tweak a number of settings related to your NVIDIA video card. These settings are usually not changeable via default driver control panel. This includes monitoring GPU core temperature, controlling fan speed, Overclocking and a number of other low level and driver level settings.

RivaTuner 2.22 adds ForceWare 181.XX (including 181.00) driver support. It also includes support for ForceWare 180.87 and 180.88 versions. This should eliminate the forceware version not supported error messages at startup. I use RivaTuner mainly to monitor my VGA temperature. Another useful feature is that you can change the GPU fan speed at the driver level. If you are having graphcis card overheating problems, first try increasing fan speed to 100% using Rivatuner (NVIDIA’s GPU fans usually run at 60% of max speed by default).

rivatuner logo

Developer Description

RivaTuner is a complete powerful tweaking environment, providing you everything you may need to tune NVIDIA GPU based display adapters. The widest driver-level Direct3D / OpenGL and system tuning options, flexible profiling system allowing to make custom settings on per-application basis, both driver-level and low-level hardware access modes, unique diagnostic and real-time hardware monitoring features and exclusive power user oriented tools like built-in registry editor and patch script engine.

NVIDIA 181.00 beta drivers with OpenGL 3.0 support - Download

Recently we reported you about NVIDIA’s v180.84 driver release. Although it has only been a few days since the last release, apparently you can now download the v181.00 BETA drivers for Windows XP 32-bit and Windows Vista 32/64-bit operating systems. The significance of this release is that these drivers support OpenGL 3.0 extensions. 181.00 drivers are dated 12/15/2008 and carry the version number 6.14.11.8100. If you are a Linux user, you can download v180.11.02 drivers which also feature OpenGL 3.0 support.

developer zone

From what I have seen these drivers are compatible with Geforce 6 series cards and above. But to enjoy OpenGL 3.0 features, you need to have a Geforce 8 series or a newer GPU (G80 core or newer). I did not have the time to test these out with any games so far so I cannot really comment about their performance. Note that these are still beta drivers so proceed at your own risk. You can read the full release notes from this link.

ATI releases Catalyst 8.12 display drivers - Download

Several days ago we reported that nVIDIA released GTA 4 optimized v180.84 ForceWare. If you were an ATI video card user, here is some good news – ATI have released Catalyst 8.12 drivers. These drivers are supposed to increase performance, fix graphics corruption issues and compatibility issues on number of games including Grand Theft Auto 4.

Although Catalyst 8.12 is supposed to optimize GTA 4 performance, release notes mention nothing of it. I could not test these drivers myself as I do not own an ATI graphics card. Anyways it is highly recommended to to update your drivers to the latest version.

ATI Catalyst 8.11 WHQL Download

ATI have released version 8.11 of their popular catalyst drivers. It’s a WHQL certified driver and is available for Windows XP (32-bit/64-bit), Vista (32-bit/64-bit) and Windows XP Media Center Edition. As usual, you can download the display driver separately or along with Catalyst Control Center. I tried to have a look at the release notes but could not download the PDF files as it stopped halfway and sometimes returned 403 errors :S. Anyway it’s recommended to upgrade to latest version if you own an ATI graphics card as it will probably help you with any problems you are having while playing latest PC titles.
