If you use any of Windows Live Essentials 2011 Beta applications on your machine (Messenger, Mail, Writer, Photo Gallery or Movie Maker) you might want to check this out. Microsoft recently released a beta refresh (aka beta 2) of Windows Live Essentials 2011 (Wave 4) which included significant updates to almost all applications in the suite. This updated Windows Live Messenger (WLM), probably the most popular app in the bunch, to build 15.4.3002.810. Microsoft promises faster connectivity, improved video chat and improved Facebook integration in this new build. Other applications too have been improved, for example with better facial recognition in Photo Gallery, support for larger uploads in Movie Maker, etc. If you are looking for the full standalone, offline, redistributable installer of the latest Windows Live Suite, we have the download link below.

If you try to download Windows Live Essentials suite from it’s official download location, you will by default be provided with the web installer. This is good if you want to download selected applications and install them only once. However, the web setup will blow when there are multiple computers – you’ll have to run it on all PCs separately. Although not exposed to the public, Microsoft hosts a redistributable installer of the live suite on their download servers. This includes all files required for the installation of full Windows Live Essentials suite on your PC and it can be used multiple times on multiple computers, even on those without an internet connection. Since the setup package includes all Live apps, it weighs around 135MB in file size – you can however select and install only the components you need during setup.

Trillian 5 – All In One Desktop Client For MSN, Yahoo, Google Talk, Twitter, Facebook & More

Life was so simple back when only one or two instant messaging networks existed – this was the era before Facebook and Twitter. Trillian 5 is a major upgrade over previous 4.X Trillian Astra releases – and Cerulean studios seem to have got a lot of things right with this release. First and foremost, Trillian 5 is faster than ever. I’ve been using Astra for several months and the new version felt a lot smoother and more responsive the moment I tried it. As always, RAM consumption was fairly low with the memory resident module using around 30MB max (around 15MB average) memory.

Trillian’s user interface has seen some massive improvements in v5.  It’s no longer the cluttered layout that made you jump hoops to read a Twitter update or interact with your Facebook account. Trillian 5 features separate modules and direct integration with both Twitter and Facebook (alongside a number of other services, with support for more possible via plugins) – following and managing these services via the app is now a pleasure.

On top of UI and speed improvements, Trillian 5 comes packed with numerous other features such as synchronized chat history, Foursquare with GPS support, native video and audio chat, group chat, file transfers, compact mode, full Windows 7 integration, support for over 18 different IM and social media services including IRC and POP3 Email, fully skinnable interface, etc.

Note that Trillian 5 is currently in beta, I’ve been using the beta version for several days and so far but haven’t come across any major issues or crashes apart from several minor glitches. The pre release version looks very much usable and is highly recommended to anyone who users Twitter, Facebook and instant messaging extensively.

Windows Live Essentials Wave 4 Beta – How To Select And Install Components You Need

Microsoft has released a major update to their Windows Live products suite - Windows Live Essentials Wave 4 is currently in beta and is now available to the public. The WL Essentials suite consists of 9 different software; Windows Live Messenger, Writer, Mail, Sync, Photo Gallery & Movie Maker, Family Safety, Bing Bar and Outlook Connector Pack. All of the above apps have received major upgrades over their older Wave 3 versions. For example, WLM 15 (aka WLM 2011) now features Facebook integration including Facebook chat and other social updates from the service. Although there have been leaked builds available on various 3rd party sites for a while, you can now download the official Wave 4 beta suite directly from Microsoft. And contrary to popular belief, you can select and install only the components you need – installing all 9 apps is not mandatory.

I came across several different popular tech blogs where it was mentioned that you needed to install the entire Windows Live Essentials suite on your computer if you wanted to test out at least one app from the bunch. This is not exactly true – there are two versions of Windows Live Essentials Wave 4 installer. One will start installing the entire suite without any user prompt but the other would give a screen (see image above) where you can select and deselect which components to install. Personally, I only use two software in the Live suite – Writer and Messenger. It would be stupid to install 7 other apps I’d never use and clutter my system just to try these two out.

Windows Live Messenger Build 14.0.8117.416 Standalone Offline Installer

While we all wait for Windows Live Wave 4 series products to be released to the public, here’s a new build of an existing Wave 3 product. Windows Live Messenger (WLM – formerly MSN Messenger), the popular IM client for the Windows platform, has received a new minor update in build 14.0.8117.416. As usual a changelog which should include a complete list of changes in the new build is missing and we are left guessing what’s new – according to an article on Softpedia this update is only bugfixes. Note that we have linked to the full standalone, offline setup of the program as opposed to the over the web installer that Microsoft provides by default.

The offline installer will be useful for people who have multiple computers, limited bandwidth internet connections, unstable internet connections etc. The idea is to download the entire setup file to hard disk and then re-use the setup to install on any number of computers whenever, wherever you like.

That being said, the installer contains full installations for ALL (not just WLM) Windows Live apps including Mail, Writer, Movie Maker and so on. The file size is 135mb. If you find the file size to be too large – you can download the regular, online version of WLM setup to get the newest build as well.

Yahoo! Messenger 10.0.0.1264 Standalone Offline Installer Download

We used to post these offline standalone installer builds for various IM clients quite frequently but with us focusing more on the BitTorrent front this has died down a bit. To keep things moving and up to date, here’s the standalone, redistributable installer for the latest available build of Yahoo! Messenger. An advantage of downloading the full installer as opposed to the default over the web download provided by Yahoo! is that you can save the full setup to your hard disk and install it on as many machines, whenever, wherever you like. Note that this setup is not a hacked version nor a custom build. It’s provided by Yahoo! themselves – they just don’t show it on the default download page.

When you run the installer, make sure to install only what you need. By default the this setup comes bundled with a lot of unwanted crap (IMHO) such as Yahoo! browser toolbars and so on – the average user just needs the core IM program so we recommend you install just that without cluttering your system with other junk (unless you really need them of course).

Facebook Desktop Client From Microsoft Based on Silverlight

Here’s a nice little application for FaceBook addicts out there. It’s a small piece of software based on Microsoft Silverlight that allows users manage their Facebook accounts right from the Windows desktop. What’s special about this app is that it’s developed and maintained by Microsoft itself (we’re not only talking about Silverlight but of the FB client as well). While it’s a very nice looking piece of software with several cool features, keep in mind that it’s still in beta. You will need to install the Silverlight 4 developer preview to run the application. Once installed, you can interact with your Facebook account from the desktop with no browser involvement at all and perform a number of functions such as updating status, viewing or downloading photos, messaging and so on.

First thing you’ll notice about this application will be it’s eye catching user interface with flashy menus and text. This UI gives you easy access to the news feed, status updates, links, videos, events and photo albums and is a pleasure to navigate. You can even customize the layout to change the way items are displayed. The experience would have been even more complete had MS implemented Facebook chat but for an application that’s still in beta this is excellent.

Yahoo Messenger 10 Final Standalone Offline Installer - Direct Download

As you may know we’ve been offering direct download links to standalone/offline installers for various pieces of software for quite some time. Now here’s great news for users of Yahoo! Messenger. After being in beta for couple of months, Yahoo! has released the first final build of Yahoo! Messenger 10 (build 10.0.0.1102) to the masses. A-Patch for Windows Live Messenger 14.0.8089.0726 - Download

Earlier we reported about the release of Windows Live Messenger (WLM) 14.0.8089.0726 Quick Fix Engineering build. For those who are addicted to the use of A-Patch alongside WLM, this should be great news - A-Patch 1.43 build 3 has been released and it adds compatibility for the latest WLM build. If you didn’t know already, ‘A-Patch’ is a patch' for Windows Live Messenger which can be used to disable advertisements, remove unwanted menus, remove minimum nudge delay, enable polygamy support and perform many other tasks which are otherwise unavailable via WLM options.

Earlier on, A-Patch  featured close to a hundred settings which could be tweaked easily. However with the release of Windows Live Messenger 9 series, number of available customization options have drastically reduced. Developers claim this is due to a new sort of protection Microsoft added to the executable.

Windows Live Messenger 14.0.8089.726 Standalone/Offline Installer

A new build of Windows Live Messenger (WLM) 2009 beta is now available. WLM 14.0.8089.726 seems to be the successor to previous 14.0.8064.0206 build – however there is little to no information available on what’s changed in this version. This primarily looks like a QFE (Quick Fix Engineering) release and Microsoft has been a little discreet about its release. Existing v14.0.8064.0206 users are not being prompted to automatically update to the new build which hasn’t been the case with previous updates. It seems that even Softpedia were asked to remove the download from their servers, at least temporarily.

I initially thought that Microsoft had refreshed all of their their Live Wave 3 apps when I saw the release of Windows Live Movie Maker 14 Final (Build 14.0.8091.0730), alongside WLM update. However this does not seem to be the case. Right now it’s not known for certain if WLM 14.0.8089.726 is even considered as an official update.

WLM Universal Patcher – Disable and remove ads in Windows Live Messenger

We’ve already talked about A-Patch on this blog and here is yet another utility to disable and remove advertisements in Microsoft’s popular IM client, Windows Live Messenger. WLM Universal Patcher does not have a whole lot of customization options but it has a few that matters the most such as ability to disable banner ads, ability to hide tabs, ad bar, MSN search component and of course multiple login support (aka polygamy). There have been multiple versions of this software released on the net but the latest available build at time of this post seems to be v.1.2.0.

There isn't much to talk about this app because everything WLM Universal Patcher does is self explanatory. It is of course a free piece of software which you can download in less than a minute in most cases (only 156kb in file size). Note that WLM Universal Patcher will require an unmodified installation of Windows Live Messenger. If you have applied any other patches that modified WLM exe, you might need to reinstall the software before running universal patcher.

Twe2 – Get Twitter SMS updates even in unsupported and blocked countries

Most of us are familiar with the infamous micro blogging service Twitter. Among the many new features introduced by Twitter was an SMS updates feature which delivered status messages right into users mobile phones. Some fans of this service were disappointed when Twitter suspended offering SMS updates to some countries a few months ago. Here is the good news - Twe2 is a new free 3rd party service that delivers SMS updates even to countries that are not supported by Twitter.

To set up SMS updates, just login to Twe2 with your Twitter username and password. You will then be required to confirm your mobile via an SMS code. I did not experience any delays with confirmation SMS when I signed up.

Twe2 supports a long list of countries including Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Romania, Sweden, Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, and lots more (see here for a full list of supported countries). Twe2 SMS service seems to be powered by Wadja.com – sometimes you get a few lines of advertisements in SMS updates. Considering the fact that this service is free, this is something I can live with. Twe2 does not seem to have any monthly SMS update limits. There is however a limit of 10 SMS updates per hour (this does not affect your Twitter account in any way).

How to get FILEnetworks Blog updates via SMS

Of course this now means that you can get FILEnetworks Blog updates delivered via SMS right into your mobile. All you have to do is to follow us on twitter– whenever we make a new post, our twitter feed gets automatically updated. If you have subscribed to SMS updates either via Twitter or Twe2, the new blog post notification will be delivered right into your mobile. This should be great for those of you who don’t want to miss private tracker open signups which sometimes only last for minutes.

A-Patch for Windows Live Messenger 2009 build 14.0.8064.0206 – Remove ads & more

A moment ago we posted about the standalone/offline installer for Windows Live Messenger 2009 build 14.0.8064.0206. This post features a new A-Patch version compatible with this WLM build. A-Patch is a useful little utility that allows you to ‘hack’ messenger and do several customizations that are otherwise unavailable. This includes disabling advertisements, removing unwanted menus, removing minimum nudge delay, enabling polygamy support and several others.

Since version 1.42 and 1.43, number of customization options available on A-Patch has been drastically reduced. the reason according to the developer is the new type of protection present in Windows Live 9 (2009) series of messenger. I’ve been using this app for more than 1.5 years and it hasn't given me any trouble so far. Check it out it’s damn useful.

Windows Live Messenger 9 Final 14.0.8064.0206 Standalone/Offline Installer

Microsoft silently released a new build of Windows Live Messenger 2009 Final earlier this month. WLM 9 build 14.0.8064.0206 is the successor to previously released version 14.0.8050.1202. Up until yesterday, there was no full/standalone installer available for the new build. Users who wanted to download it had to reply on the Windows Live Essentials web installer. If you were looking for an offline installer for Live Messenger 14.0.8064.026, we have some good news.

The offline installer will be useful for people who have multiple computers, limited bandwidth internet connections, unstable internet connections etc. The idea is to download the entire setup file to hard disk and then use it to install on any number of computers whenever, wherever you like.

By the way Microsoft have again refrained from releasing a changelog for this latest update – there is no official word on what has been changed/fixed/improved in build 14.0.8064.0206. I could not find any notable changes between the two versions but upgrading to the latest available build of WLM is highly recommended.
