How To Fix Nokia Phones Not Getting Detected In PC Suite/OVI Suite After Update

I’ve been using Nokia OVI suite to connect my Nokia N86 8MP mobile device to the PC for quite some time. Since I had not updated OVI suite in a while and the app had been complaining about new versions being available, today I let the built in auto updater run. After the update was completed and system was restarted, I ran into a strange problem. The phone was not getting detected properly in either OVI suite or PC Suite. Initially OVI suite gave the error message ‘Please change the USB mode on your phone’ (or something like that) and wanted me to switch the connectivity mode to ‘PC Suite’. Problem was that it was already set to PC suite mode. Then I tried removing the device from OVI suite and re-adding it but the results were far worse this time.

Now the phone was not getting detected properly at all – OVI suite identified it as ‘S60 Handset’ and kept complaining about a connection made with an unsupported USB mode. PC Suite did not seem to recognize the phone as well. However I could browse the device’s internal memory as well as memory card contents using ‘Portable Devices’ section on Windows' 7’s my computer. After searching online for a solution (and having found that nothing seemed to work in my case) i decided to try a simple fix which had helped me resolve a similar issue with a different, older phone model – reinstalling the Nokia connectivity cable driver. After I reinstalled the cable driver and re-connected the mobile device to PC, it installed all the drivers for my phone model from scratch and everything returned to normal :)

Note that I ran into this bug after updating from an older version of OVI suite to the latest version (v2.1.1.1 with connectivity driver 7.1.27.0)  on a Windows 7 operating system. If you run into a similar issue – here are step by step instructions on how to reinstall the connectivity cable driver.

nokia reinstall cable driver

  1. Disconnect your phone from PC if connected.
  2. Open Control Panel and go to ‘Programs and Features’
  3. From the list of available programs, choose ‘Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver’
  4. Click on the ‘Change’ button on top toolbar.
  5. In the setup dialog box that pops up next, choose ‘Repair’ and select ok. Wait for setup to complete.
  6. Restart the computer if prompted.
  7. Now connect your phone to the PC. Driver installation should complete and both OVI suite and PC suite (hopefully) should detect your mobile properly now.

JDownloader – Best Download Manager For One Click Hosting Services & DDL Forums

Here on FILEnetworks Blog, we talk about Direct Download Link (DDL) forums quite frequently in our DDL Forums section. Just like private torrent trackers, these sites offer easy access to latest movies, music, documentaries, games, TV shows and pretty much everything else that leak online. A common characteristic of these sites is that they merely index download links – files are actually hosted on one click hosting sites such as RapidShare, DepositFiles, Hotfile, Mediafire, etc. This is where JDownloader comes in – it’s simply one of the best download managers for use with one click hosting services and is an essential tool to have if you rely on DDL forums to download large files (this applies for non-premium account holders as well). Download it, install it and watch JDdownloader pummel through multiple download links without user or web browser interaction at all.

JDownloader Icon

There are tons of good things that can be said about this application but let’s start with the basics – downloading a particular movie or TV release from a DDL forum. As you may already know, a single movie or TV episode is usually broken into multiple pieces (using WinRAR) and uploaded to one click hosters. Thus, each release has several download links and you need to download them all, place all parts in the same folder and merge them together to get the complete file. This can be painful and time consuming especially if you don’t have a premium account on whatever file hosting service you are using.

Enter JDownloader – with the latest version of JD, all you have to do in order to download a multi part movie is to select the set of download links in your web browser, right click and select Copy. The software’s built in LinkGrabber will identify the links, automatically check their online status and provide you with options to download the files via a user friendly interface (this behavior does not require you to install any browser add-on, script or plug-in– only requirement is to have JD running in background i.e. minimized to tray).

JDownloader Screenshot

Even if you don’t own a premium account, you no longer have to worry about entering captacha, wait times, etc with JDownloader around. It will auto detect the captcha with built in OCR module, manage wait times and eventually complete the download (all files) without any additional help from the user. Better yet, JDownloader can automatically merge and UnRAR downloaded files with the built in JD-UnRAR plugin.

There are tons of other features of this application in addition to the ones previously mentioned – some of the most notable ones are summarized below:

  • Support for over 100 one click hosting services including most popular hosters such as RapidShare, Megaupload, HotFile, FileFactory, Netload and many many more
  • Support for simultaneous downloads
  • Ability to avoid IP specific limitations with IP renewal feature (for dynamic IP connections only) – right click system tray icon and hit ‘Refresh IP’
  • Support for Metalink standard – specify multiple download locations for a single file
  • Support for premium account features
  • Automatic reconnect – right click system tray and hit ‘Enabled automated reconnect’
  • Password management – specify RAR file passwords when starting the download itself
  • Tons of additional functionality available through add-ons

Download

Written in platform independent Java programming language, JDownloader is available for multiple operating systems including Windows, Linux, Mac-OS and more. Note that you will need to have Java Runtime Environment installed on your machine to run this software (if you don’t already have it that is).

[Click Here] to download the latest version of JDownloader from the official download page

[Click Here] to download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Note: During JDownloader setup, you will be asked to install a browser add-on. This is optional and cancelling will not affect JDownloader installation in any way.

Now that you have JD installed and in case you are running out of things to download, check out our DDL Forums section – among the sites featured there (and the ones that will be introduced in the future), I'm sure you won’t run out of download links again :p

MobiReader – Best EBook Reader For Symbian S60, Windows Mobile, Java & Others?

I’ve tried using many 3rd party applications for reading PDF, TXT and HTML Ebooks on my Symbian mobile device (trying to view a PDF file with the built in Adobe Reader LE proved to be too painful). However, most of these apps had some feature missing that ruined the whole experience. Luckily, i stumbled across MobiReader (by MobiePocket) which IMHO is the best eBook reader currently available for Symbian powered smartphones (and possibly for other mobile platforms as well). MobiReader incorporates some really handy features such as resume from last position, bookmarks, auto scrolling, text customization, dynamic zoom, keyboard shortcuts, search and more. It’s free and is available for a number of different mobile platforms including Series 60 (S60v1, S60v2, S60v3, S60v5), Windows Mobile, Java, BlackBerry, PalmOS and more.

MobiPocket Reader

You can purchase eBooks from MobiPocket store or you can download books from compatible catalog projects. However it’s not only purchased books you can view using MobiReader (pirates be thankful ;p). If you download books in PDF format (from E-Learning torrent trackers, one click hosting sites, etc) you can view them on your mobile using this software too. However, you’d first need to convert downloaded books to a MobiReader compatible format. This is easily done using a desktop software called MobiPocket creator (this is again a free software). A brief tutorial on how to do this can be found below.

  1. Install MobiReader on your mobile device by visiting http://m.mobipocket.com using your device’s built in web browser.
  2. Download and MobiPocket Creator for your PC using this link.
  3. Open MobiPocket Creator once it’s installed on your computer.
  4. Drag and drop the ebook you need converted to MobiReader format. Choose a destination folder and hit ‘import’.
  5. In the ‘Publication Files’ window, select the file you just imported and hit ‘Build’ from the top toolbar (or you can customize the book further before building using the controls on left sidebar pane).
  6. In the next Window, make sure you have the options set to ‘No Compression’ and ‘No Encryption’. Then hit the ‘Build’ button.
  7. Once build completes you can preview how the book will be displayed on your mobile using the built in emulator tool. This is optional.
  8. Open the destination folder you chose at step 4. You will see a file with .prc extension.
  9. Move this file to your mobile device via BlueTooth, USB cable or any other medium.
  10. Once copied to mobile device, open the file with MobiReader and start reading.

If you know any other good E-Book reader software for mobiles, feel free to share your thoughts via comments.

How to get new torrent updates via Twitter

In our last post we highlighted how important a service Twitter has become in this era. Although there are tons of Twitter apps for various tasks, I’ve not seen many apps that are related to BitTorrent being launched (apart from a few such as TorrentTwitter). This article will teach you how to create a Twitter account that automatically Tweets when new torrents are released on private torrent trackers. It’s not rocket science and is just a matter of bridging together two already existing services; TwitterFeed and tracker RSS.

twitterfeed

What we’re goanna do is to ‘burn’ a private tracker’s RSS feed into Twitter so that it’ll tweet whenever a new torrent is added to the tracker. Yeah it’s basically like subscribing to the RSS feed but with followers and 3rd party Twitter apps it’d be way cooler than RSS.

  1. If you don’t have a Twitter account, go to http://twitter.com/signup and create one now.
  2. Visit www.twitterfeed.com and create a new account. Login using the newly created TwitterFeed account and click on ‘go to my twitter feeds (or create a new one)’.
  3. Click on create new feed. You will be asked to fill a form.
  4. In ‘username’ and ‘password’ fields, type the same username and password used for the Twitter account you created at step 1. Paste a compatible RSS feed from private tracker into the ‘RSS feed’ field. Note: For more help on finding a compatible RSS feed, see the ‘How to find a suitable RSS feed’ section below. Set the ‘Update Frequency’ to ‘Every 30 minutes’.
  5. Now this is important – make sure you un-tick the ‘Include item link’ checkbox (See screenshot below). If you use the RSS feed of a private tracker, leaving this checkbox ticked will expose your passkey to the public - this could get you banned from the tracker.
  6. Tick the ‘Active’ checkbox to activate the feed and press the update button.
    twitterfeed config

That should do it. Your twitter account will now automatically tweet when a new torrent is released on the private tracker of your choice.

Choosing an RSS feed

Most private and public BitTorrent trackers now provide RSS updates. On private trackers these can usually be found on the links.php page (ex-http://www.sitename.com/links.php). Some sites index these under rss.php page. On Gazelle based trackers and several other bittorrent sites, you can get the URL of RSS feed by simply logging onto the site and clicking on the orange RSS icon on the browser address bar.

Feeds compatible with TwitterFeed

Some of the private tracker RSS feeds are incompatible with TwitterFeed. If you try to use an incompatible feed, TwitterFeed will return the error message similar to “We couldn't find valid date/time stamps or GUIDs on items. Please make sure your feed contains valid pubDate entries or GUIDs for each post”. In such cases, the only options is to use a feed from another tracker. Here is a list of public and private site RSS feeds that we've found to be working with TwitterFeed.

Note that some trackers offer categorized RSS feeds. Subscribing to a categorized feed is usually better (some trackers allow you to combine updates from several categories into one RSS feed). Subscribing to the entire feed will send Twitter updates for every torrent added to the tracker whether you like it or not – and we could be talking about a hundred releases per day. When you subscribe to categorized or custom feeds, make sure you choose the ‘no cookies’ version (if available).

Want to see how this works? Check out @updateserv. @updateserv is an experimental Twitter account we made some time ago which Tweets about new Game and Movie releases (based on Romanian Sharereactor’s RSS feed).

Also, don’t forget that you can follow @filenetworks on Twitter for latest BitTorrent news, leaks and more.

How to solve ArenaBG tracker timeout and offline errors

Several days ago we posted an article about ArenaBG – a huge General/0day torrent site with no mandatory ratio requirements. Since then, our E-mail inbox began to get flooded by emails from many readers asking how to actually connect to ArenaBG’s BitTorrent tracker. Apparently a lot of users were getting tracker offline errors, not allowed or timeout errors when trying to download torrents from the site. We contacted TSL (MilenK), staff at ArenaBG tracker to know what’s up and he was kind enough to come up with both an explanation as well as a well written guide to solve this common problem.

Begin Quote:

The main reason users outside Bulgaria can't download from ArenaBG is because the announcer block their IP's. We had a lot of troubles with fake peers that used to overload our machines and that's why we block everybody outside Bulgaria. This was about 2 months ago. After that we start our work over the code and we didn't stop. One by one different countries gain back access. Until we finish our job, the only way for users from "blacklisted" countries to use our site is to set their .torrent client to communicate with the announcer through proxy server.

To solve this problem, configure uTorrent client as below:

  1. from Options menu choose Preferences and from pop-up window go to Connection.
  2. There on the bottom half of the window you will see "Proxy Server" menu.
  3. Choose "HTTP" as type of proxy server and enter the IP and the port of the proxy (see below for a list of proxy servers)
  4. In boxes bellow, DO NOT check "Authentication" and "Use proxy server for peer-to-peer connections"(you need proxy only to connect with arenabg' announcer. Checking the last one will overload the proxy server and it will stop working).
  5. "Resolve hostnames through proxy" should be checked by default - leave it that way.
  6. Restart the client.

You can use some of the following proxy servers:

  • 78.130.203.228 port:8080
  • 78.130.160.81 port:3128
  • 78.130.160.78 port:3128
  • 12.2.122.106:80
  • 196.27.25.242:80
  • 196.27.25.242:8080
  • 195.242.79.21:80
  • 195.242.79.21:8080
  • 207.34.202.2:3128
  • 200.30.0.60:80
  • 207.136.80.204:80
  • 208.143.128.5:8080
  • 207.61.27.149:8080
  • 203.134.67.3:8080
  • 204.200.106.20:8080
  • 202.225.130.10:8080
  • 196.27.0.30:8080
  • 195.114.64.78:8080
  • 204.112.61.48:8080
  • 63.71.28.2:8080
  • or choose one from http://proxy-list.org/en/index.php

The countries that have access for now are Germany, Egypt, Croatia, Italy, Sweden, Spain, Austria, Pakistan, Great Britain, India and Turkey. For last three countries, there could be some regions that still do not have access, but they are not more. However, USA will be the last one to gain back access, because the biggest fllo is from there.

End Quote. – Guide written by TSL, edited by TEAM FILEnetworks

So there you have it – thanks to the excellent guide by TSL your ArenaBG tracker problems should now be solved. Happy downloading!

CAUTION: Once you configure uTorrent using the above method note that it will connect to each and every BitTorrent tracker (not just ArenaBG) through the specified proxy address. Some private torrent trackers prohibit the use of proxy servers – make sure you undo the configuration changes made to the client before connecting to such trackers or you may get banned for violating rules.

How to spoof, fake and cheat ratio on private BitTorrent trackers

Private BitTorrent trackers are probably one of the fastest mediums to download new and old movie, music, game and TV Show releases. However, on most private trackers, you need to maintain a minimum upload:download ratio (you need to upload a similar amount of data you downloaded) in order to survive without getting banned. Apparently some users don’t like this system and try to cheat their ratio using hacked clients, modded clients, data spoofing and other methods.

Now that we’ve got your attention with the fake title, let us tell you that this article won’t teach you how to cheat on private torrent trackers (even if there was a 100% safe way of doing that, which there isn’t). Instead, we’ll tell you how to build your ratio without resorting to cheating – yes, there are many legitimate methods.

Why do private trackers have a ratio system?

As we said earlier, one of the main advantages that a private tracker has over public trackers is the high download speeds. BitTorrent community is based on ‘sharing’ – if you take something, you have to give something back. BitTorrent trackers themselves don’t host any files – they merely help you track pieces of the file you are downloading. You actually download the file from hard drives of other users connected to the tracker (like you). Now what if everybody decided to stop uploading or spoof upload data? You won’t be able to download the file at all. Public trackers are plagued with hit and runners (those who immediately stop uploading once the torrent download is finished) and they are the primary cause of slow download speeds. This is why most trackers implement a ratio system– they ensure that everyone ‘gives something back’.

Why you shouldn’t cheat on private torrent trackers

First of all there is no 100% safe tool or method for BitTorrent ratio cheating. One way or the other you’ll get caught and when you do, it usually results in a lifetime ban. There are many ways for tracker administrators and staff to detect cheaters:

  • Scripts -  Most private trackers have scripts can detect cheaters based on their behavior. Such scripts can detect most hacked, modded or banned BitTorrent clients almost instantaneously.
  • Other users – Other members of the tracker can report you to administrators if they find anything suspicious in your stats, snatchlist data, etc. This is usually done via the ‘report this user’ button located in each user’s profile page.
  • Peer list – Almost every BitTorrent client shows a list of connected peers for a specific torrent. Majority of hacked or modded clients become exposed in this peerlist when they begin to display true client details instead of spoofed data. It’s only a matter of time till someone else in the peerlist notices you and reports you to the admins.
  • BTBan Project – BTBan (http://btban.net/) is a new project aimed at stopping cheaters, traders and other scammers on private trackers. More information can be found here. EDIT: The site has been down for quite a while. The project may have been abandoned.

So i got caught cheating. Now what?

The punishment for ratio cheating is almost always a lifetime ban from the tracker. One thing most users don’t know is that you can get banned from several trackers at once if you get caught cheating on at least one. Tracker staff talk to each other usually on IRC and they willingly share information about cheaters and other scammers. So if you cheat on one tracker, expect to get banned on several others. The ban is usually based on your IP address. Don’t feel so safe if you have a dynamic IP  - ever heard of range bans and country bans?

How can I improve my ratio without resorting to cheating?

Although many users are unaware, there are many other ways than spoofing or faking your ratio to survive on private trackers. Some are mentioned below:

Free leech periods – Most private torrent trackers have something called free leech. When a torrent is on free leech, only the upload amount gets counted in your global ratio (you still need to seed the torrent back in most cases). This is an excellent way to build your overall ratio. Some trackers have free leech on selected torrents (packs, exclusive releases, etc) while there have been occasions where entire torrent indexes have been placed on free leech for several days. Free leech is usually notified via site news or mass PM.

Seed hours/Seed bonus – Some trackers maintain a points system usually identified as seed bonus (for example in BCG), credits or karma bonus system. What most people don’t know is that the points you earn can be redeemed as upload credit (Ex- spend 100 points for 2.5Gb upload added to your ratio). Points can usually be earned by seeding for extended times, taking part in competitions, etc (If a site featured on FILEnetworks Blog comes with a bonus points system, we usually mention it in the article so keep your eyes peeled).

Upload multiplier – Maybe you’ve noticed on some trackers about ‘double upload’ or 2X/4X upload bonuses. When an upload multiplier is enabled for a torrent, the actual amount of data you upload is added to your stats with a multiplier (Ex- Seed 2GB on a double upload enabled torrent and you’ll be credited with 2x2=4GB credit). Sites such as ScL have a dynamic upload multiplier which changes frequently and applies to both download and upload.

Competitions – Most private trackers have various competitions which are open to all members. These competitions are not there purely for fun – if you manage to win one you’ll usually get a load of upload credit as the prize (For example the RevolutionTT holiday IRC competition in which winners received 30GB free upload credit).

Donations – This is perhaps the least popular way of obtaining upload credit. But the fact is that if you donate to a private tracker, you not only help the admins to run the site but you’ll usually receive loads of goodies such as free upload credit, special upload multipliers, VIP membership, etc.

Ratio free trackers – If the hatred for a ratio system is in your blood and you still want to use private trackers, give ratio free trackers a go. Unlike the several years ago, nowadays ratio free trackers are not rare and it’s not hard to get into such sites at all. Here is a list of no ratio trackers that are open for public signup.

Semi private trackers – Although not a replacement for private trackers, these sites are marginally better than public BitTorrent sites. Two good semi private trackers are H33T and Demonoid.com

Sort by leechers and download – This is an often overlooked tactic which can be used to improve your ratio on hard to survive trackers. As you may have noticed, some sites allow sorting the torrent index by number of seeders/leechers. If you sort the list by leechers (descending order), you’ll get the torrents with highest demand on the tracker. Jump on these torrent and start uploading – it’s a good way to earn upload credit.

Remember that sharing is caring – cheating simply ain’t worth it.

How to configure ADSL modem to auto dial on startup & auto reconnect upon disconnection (XP/Vista)

On one of my machines I use an ADSL USB modem instead of a router. Unlike a router, this modem uses a dial up connection to connect to the internet – it does not automatically connect to the net when the system is booted up and nor does it automatically reconnect if the line is dropped. For those who are used to (or prefer) automated connection/re-connection, this can be pretty painful. This article tells you how to configure your dial up connection to auto connect at startup & to auto redial upon disconnection.

How to configure your ADSL modem to automatically connect at startup

For this to work, you need to have your dial up connection set up and username, password and phone number saved on the connection.

On Windows XP:

  1. Open Control Panel and open Network Connections
  2. Dial up and LAN connections you have created on your machine will be listed. Find the dial up connection you want to auto dial on startup, right click it and select properties.
  3. Open the ‘Options’ tab. Uncheck the checkbox that says ‘Prompt for name, password, certificate, etc”. Also uncheck the ‘Prompt for phone number’ checkbox.
  4. Press ok to close the options dialog.
  5. Back in the Network Connections window, right click the dial up connection you just modified and click ‘create a shortcut’. Allow the shortcut to be placed on desktop as per the warning message.
  6. Cut the shortcut from the desktop and paste it in your Start Menu—>Startup folder.

On Windows Vista

  1. Open control panel and open Network and sharing center
  2. From the list of options on the left panel, choose ‘manage network connections’. Dial up and LAN connections you have created on your machine will be listed. Find the dial up connection you want to auto dial on startup, right click it and select properties.
  3. Steps 3 and onwards are the same for both Windows XP and Vista (follow instructions for XP method above)

How to configure your dial up connection to automatically redial if disconnected

On Windows XP

  1. Open Control Panel and open Network Connections
  2. Dial up and LAN connections you have created on your machine will be listed. Find the dial up connection you want to auto dial on startup, right click it and select properties.
  3. Open the ‘Options’ tab. Under redial options, set the number of redial attempts to a number greater than 0 (something like 3 or 5 will do)
  4. Set time between redial attempts to 30 seconds (some modems take some time to re-initialize after disconnection)
  5. Check the ‘Redial if line is dropped’ check box and click ok to save and close the dialog box.
  6. OPTIONAL: You may want to change your power saver settings so that the PC never auto switches to standby mode. Sometimes the computer go on standby before dial up networking can establish a new connection (if line dropped during an idle period).

Here is a screenshot of how your dial up connection should be configured for auto dialup and auto re-connect.

How to keep SCL invites beyond the allowed time period

As you may already be aware, ScL tracker usually removes invites after a certain time period. For example during their 2nd phase of expansion, every user on the tracker were given 3 invites each. These had to be used within 10 days and if unused during this time, the invites were removed from the user’s account. Did you know that there is a simple method that allows you to retain invites even after the allowed time period?

scl logo

From what I've seen, this seems to be a popular hack among ScL members.

  1. Visit your invites page (invite.php) and create invitation codes from all available invites.
  2. Do not give away the codes just yet (that is, if you want to retain the invites). Wait for the automatic invite removal deadline to pass.
  3. Wait 24-36 hours after the deadline is passed and visit your invite.php page again.
  4. Now revert all invitation codes you generated at step 1 back into invites.

I could not find a tracker rule (on faq.php, rules.php or on forum) that prohibits the use of this method. The staff may or may not be aware of its existence - proceed at your own risk.

How to unlock preorder bonus content in Warhammer 40000 : Dawn of War 2 (wargear, paints and maps)

It’s been about two weeks since Warhammer 40000 : Dawn of War 2 was released. W40K : DoW2 had multiple ‘editions’ released to the public. For example gamers who pre-ordered the game from services such as Gamestop, EBgames, Amazon, Direct2Drive, HMV, etc could unlock several bonus special features such as extra chapters, extra maps, unique items and extra colors (paints). Did you know that even those who did not pre-order the game could unlock these options on the regular version of the game?

cs.rin.ru

I found this while surfing CS.RIN.RU - a famous Steam underground community from where one of the first working Steam hacks for FEAR2 originated. There is a thread on CS.RIN.RU’s English forums which describes in detail how you can unlock bonus content in Warhammer 40000 : Dawn of War 2. This thread also includes download links for all required files.

  1. Create an account on CS.RIN.RU English forums. Registration URL: http://cs.rin.ru/forum/ucp.php?mode=register
  2. Login with the newly created account.
  3. Visit this thread and follow all the instructions carefully. There are 2-3 pages of user comments which I strongly recommend you read before applying the hack.

Note: Some (not all) users have had problems running this on Windows XP. I tried it on Vista 32-bit and it worked just fine. Read the user comments on the thread if you encounter problems. Chances are that your question has already been answered.

What additional content is in Warhammer 40000 : Dawn of War 2 pre-order, bonus, promotional editions?

This is actually not an easy question to answer since there are several different versions of the game each with different features. From what we heard, the total promotional content included is as follows:

  • 23 Unique Items
  • 7 Space Marines Chapters
  • 28 Extra Colors
  • 1 Extra Multiplayer Map

I don’t know for sure which of these features the hack above unlocks. It may unlock all or it may unlock only some of these – either way it works and is actually pretty cool.

How to get free SMS updates on new torrent releases (Movies, Games, TV & More)

RSS and E-Mail updates on new torrent releases are now being provided by most private and public BitTorrent trackers out there. But have you ever heard about SMS updates on new torrent releases? Wouldn’t it be cool if you could get notified via SMS when RELOADED releases the latest PC game, or when group mVs leaks a DVD Screener of a highly anticipated movie? Well, it’s possible and we are going to tell you how.

This is made possible by combining several free services such as Twitter, TwitterFeed and Twe2. All you need to get SMS updates is a Twitter account, a TwitterFeed account, and a phone connected to a mobile network compatible with Twe2 service.

SMS Torrrent Updates FILEnetworks
This is how it works

We’ve provided step by step instructions below to setup SMS updates on new torrent releases. Although it may seem a lengthy process, it’s actually very simple. Check it out.

Creating a new Twitter account

First, you need to create a new Twitter account. Twitter account will be used to relay the torrent release updates via SMS. When signing up for a new account, It is important that you choose a unique text string as the username. This text should not already be present anywhere in the Twitter database. SMS updates will be based on a search for your Twitter username – if you choose a common name, you will get SMS updates unrelated to torrent releases. To determine if your username is really unique, do a search for it on http://search.twitter.com/. If the search returns no results, go ahead with the chosen name. If the search returns 1 or more results that means the string is common – choose another.

no results

1. Go to http://twitter.com/signup and create a new account. Remember the username and password of this account – you will need them later.

TwitterFeed Configuration

Now, you have to integrate the RSS feed from the private/public BitTorrent tracker into the Twitter account. This can easily be done using TwitterFeed.

Twe2 Configuration

As we mentioned in a previous article, Twe2 is a free service that delivers Twitter messages via SMS even to countries not supported by Twitter (for more information about this service and a list of supported countries, look here).

7. Visit http://twe2.com and login to Twe2 using username and password of the Twitter account you created at step 1.

8. If you have not confirmed your mobile number, you will be prompted to do so. Enter the confirmation SMS code you receive in your mobile to complete the process.

9. Now you need to setup Twe2 so that it’ll search for and send SMS updates about any new tweets from your Twitter account. This is very easy. Go to ‘Twe2 Alerts’ panel in your Twe2 account. In the text field next to ‘Add Search Term’ button, enter the username of your Twitter account you created at Step 1. Press the ‘Add Search Term’ button to add the entry.

twe2 configuration

10. That’s it.  You should start receiving SMS updates on your mobile soon. Just wait a few hours for the RSS feeds to be updated and Twe2 messages to be sent.

Additional information – Choosing an RSS feed

Most private and public BitTorrent trackers now provide RSS updates. On private trackers these can usually be found on the links.php page (ex-http://www.sitename.com/links.php). Some sites index these under rss.php page. On Gazelle based trackers and several other bittorrent sites, you can get the URL of RSS feed by simply logging onto the site and clicking on the orange RSS icon on the browser address bar.

Feeds compatible with TwitterFeed

Some of the private tracker RSS feeds are incompatible with TwitterFeed. If you try to use an incompatible feed, TwitterFeed will return the error message “We couldn't find valid date/time stamps or GUIDs on items. Please make sure your feed contains valid pubDate entries or GUIDs for each post.”. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any workaround in such cases. Only option is to use the feed of another tracker. Here is a list of public and private site RSS feeds that we've found to be working with TwitterFeed.

Note that some trackers offer categorized RSS feeds. Subscribing to a categorized feed is usually better (some trackers allow you to combine updates from several categories into one RSS feed). Subscribing to the entire feed will send SMS updates for every torrent added to the tracker whether you like it or not. When you subscribe to categorized or custom feeds, make sure you choose the ‘no cookies’ version.

Known limitations of this method

  • Sometimes it may take around 1 hour since the release of a torrent for the SMS to arrive
  • A maximum of 10 SMS updates can be sent per hour

TheVault business torrent tracker – How to get an invite

We’ve posted about several business and money making related torrent sites including Salad.tl (Open), SeductionGR (Open/Application) and Biztorrents (Open). As you can see most of these sites have regular open signups. But if you tried to signup for TheVault.BZ (which is probably the best business related tracker on the planet), you’ll find that it’s closed to the public for the most part of year. What many people don’t know is that ‘The Vault’ has an application/IRC based invite system – users with a genuine interest on the tracker can easily get invited through this system.

thevault.bz

What’s in ‘The Vault’?

TheVault.Bz has E-Books, videos, audio files, text documents and various other media associated with business related topics. This includes SEO, money making, sales/marketing, money management, economics, finance, customer service, copywriting, management, leadership, investing, trading, stocks, E-Commerce, real estate, recruitment/interviews, blogging, biographies and lots of other subjects similar to these. IMHO TheValut has some very rare content (over 10000 torrents) that is usually not found on any other tracker on the planet.

How to get invited to TheVault.bz

First of all don’t try to join TheVault just because you like to collect trackers - join it only if you have a genuine interest in any of the subjects mentioned above (or in some other business related subject).

  1. You need to get an IRC client installed. If you don’t already have one installed, we recommend you install mIRC. mIRC download links and a brief tutorial can be found here.
  2. Once IRC client is set up, change you nickname to whatever nickname you want to have on TheVault tracker (in mIRC, nickname can be changed in Tools—>Options menu.
  3. Join TheVault.BZ invites channel. This is located on IRC server irc.thevault.bz:6667 and the channel name is #thevault-invites. If you are using mIRC click on this direct link irc://irc.thevault.bz:6667/thevault-invites to visit the channel.
  4. Don’ PM anyone just yet. First read TheVault FAQ and Rules (you’ll need to read these in order to answer application questions).
  5. Now visit http://www.thevault.bz/app.php. Read the background section carefully and answer the questions as instructed. Note that you need to answer each and every one of these.
  6. Once done answering, head back to the IRC room and paste your answers along with the question number in the main channel (don’t PM). Wait for someone to respond – do not leave the channel till you have got confirmation on your new TheVault account.

Good Luck!

How to open & view .CBR, .CBZ, .CB7, .CBT and .CBA files (Comic Book Archives)

If you’ve been downloading comics books from the internet, you may have come across some strange file extensions such as .CBR, .CBZ, .CB7, .CBT and .CBA. These are basically comic book archives. Each page of a comic book is stored in a JPEG or a TIFF file and a collection of such pages are encapsulated in a single archive. None of these file types can be opened in Windows by default. But with the right software installed, you can view comic books right from your computer.

Open with regular archive handling software

Although these files have odd looking extensions, they are compressed using standard file compression algorithms such as ZIP, RAR and ACE. See the table below for more information:

Comic book archive Format Actual compression used Software
CBR RAR WinRAR [Download]
CBZ ZIP WinZip [Download]
CB7 7-ZIP 7-Zip [Download]
CBT TAR WinZip [Download]
CBA ACE WinRAR [Download]

Note that you can use any software that supports the actual compression to open a particular file type (not just the ones mentioned in ‘software to open’ column). Do not rename any of the archives to actual format. Just open the archive handling software, browse to .CBX file and choose to open it from within the program.

Open with special comic book reader software

In addition to the compression utilities mentioned above, there are comic book reader software which are specifically designed to open and view cbr, cbz and other file formats. Such software usually feature file type association, support for rotation, zoom, multi page view and other viewer enhancements, etc. Mentioned below are two of the most popular comic book reader software that are currently around.

Wondering where to download comic books in .CBR and CBZ formats? We’ll be posting several private torrent trackers and other sites that offer free comic book downloads. Keep checking the homepage and the private trackers section for latest updates.

How to extract setup files, MSI installer packages, and other archives with Universal Extractor 1.6

Almost all of you have probably worked with a setup file or an installer package if you’ve ever installed or removed programs on your computer. Did you know that you can extract the contents of such setup packages and installers without actually installing the program? Universal Extractor is a program designed specifically for this purpose.

Universal Extractor allows you to extract files from a number of archive/installer file types including Windows installer packages (.msi), Inno setup packages, StuffIt (.sit) files, ACE archives, KGB archives, Pea archives, etc. The software is lightweight (only 5MB), pretty easy to use and even has context menu integration. Universal Extractor is free and there is no need for cracks or keygens.

universal extractor

Something interesting I found with the help of this program is that some small applications do not need installing at all even though they come bundled with sophisticated installers. When this is the case, you can just extract and run em like portable software, without cluttering your registry with additional entries.

More information about this application can be found on Universal Extractor homepage.

How to easily access FTP servers with FileZilla

Although somewhat overshadowed by BitTorrent nowadays, FTP is still a good medium to distribute large files such as movies and games online. When it comes to downloading from FTP servers, FileZilla is one of the most widely used clients. For some reason, many people are unaware of the simplicity of FileZilla and the vast amount of ‘content’ (you know what we mean) that can be obtained through it. In this post, we explain where to download this software and how to use it to access open and password protected FTP servers.

filezilla

Where to download the latest version FileZilla?

FileZilla is free software and it supports Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. It’s only about 4MB in file size. You can download the latest available stable version of FileZilla directly from the official download page.

How to access normal and password protected FTP servers using FileZilla?

This is easy. A non password protected FTP server address follows a similar format to the ones mentioned below:
ftp://server:port/ or sometimes ftp://server

Sometimes, usernames and passwords to access the server can be embedded in the FTP server address. In this case the URL will follow a similar format to ftp://user:password@server:port
For example, ftp://leech:l33ch@61.145.123.141:5632/
This can be broken down as

  • Username = leech
  • Password = l33ch
  • Server = 61.145.123.141
  • Port = 5632

To access the FTP server using FileZilla, all you have to do is to paste the entire URL in the ‘Host"’ field below the menu bar. If the username and password details are embedded in the address as above, FileZilla will automatically fill the rest of the fields and connect you to the server. If the server requires login and the username and password are not included in the URL, you need to enter them manually in username, password fields below the menu bar. Once you are connected to the server, you can browse through it’s content just like in Windows explorer. To download a file, simply double click it.

P.S – The FTP link ftp://leech:l33ch@61.145.123.141:5632/ is real. Just connect to it and browse the contents – you’ll be surprised (and maybe pleased :D )

How to unlock bonus/promotional content (hidden vehicles) in Saint’s Row 2 (PC)

Saint’s Row 2, like many other PC games to be released recently, comes with bonus content that are exclusively available for those who purchased the game from a selected set of vendors/promotions (Gamestop pre-order, etc). However it turns out that this exclusive content is not that hard to unlock in the regular version after all – you just have to type in some codes. This article explains how you can unlock the bonus content in the PC version of Saint’s Row 2 even if you did not pre order the game.

SR2’s so called bonus content comprised of 3 special, hidden vehicles;  Gyro Daddy (a small helicopter), Destroy UFO (a flying saucer, believe it or not) and the Peewee mini bike (a small motorbike). Follow the steps below to unlock each of these vehicles:

1. Launch the game

2. Take out your in game cell phone. Select dial.

Get offline updates for Kaspersky Anti Virus and Internet Security 2009 (v8.0) with Kaspersky Updater 3.1.0.7

If you can remember, we previously posted an article about how and where to obtain offline virus definition updates for popular Anti Virus software. A method to manually update Kaspersky products was included in that article but here is as easier, shorter way of obtaining offline definition updates for KIS and KAV version 2009 (8.0) and other products.

Kaspersky Updater is a software designed by Kaspersky Labs itself. Until recently it was a command line only tool and was not that user friendly. However as of version 3.1.0.7 a GUI component has been added and things have become much more easier. Here is how you can manually update Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Anti Virus (and other products) using Kaspersky Updater: (Note – this tutorial is based on KIS 2009 and KAV 2009. Some steps may change slightly for other Kaspersky products)

  1. Download Kaspersky Updater base files from this link.
  2. Download Kaspersky Updater GUI component from this link.
  3. Extract both zip files to the same folder. Run KasperskyUpdater.exe
  4. Tick the Kaspersky product and version you need updates downloaded for and start updating. Wait till it finishes.
  5. Now open the application’s (KIS, KAV or whatever Kaspersky app you downloaded updates for) main window
  6. Click the Settings button
  7. In the left part of the window select Update. In the right part of the window click the Settings button
  8. On the Source tab clear (un-tick) the box Kaspersky Lab’s update servers
  9. Click the Add link. Browse the folder where you extracted Kaspersky Updater files in step 3. There should be a sub folder named Updates. Select this folder.
  10. Click OK to close each window. Run the update process. Kaspersky will now update with the downloaded virus definition files.

If you want to update another computer which does not have an internet connection, simply copy the updates folder to that computer and configure Kaspersky (Do steps 5-10 and give the location of copied Updates folder accordingly) as stated above.

Solution to Demonoid “We are full - server is too saturated” error message

Since this question was asked many times in our invitation giveaway threads, we decided to post and article about it. One of the most common problems you may encounter with Demonoid registration process is the error message “ We are full. Sorry, since the server is too saturated, we can not accept more members at the moment. However, new spots are opened every day, so please, check back later”. This article discusses a few things you can do to get around this message if you ever encounter it while trying to register for a new Demonoid account.

demonoid-logo

As far as I know, this message can pop up when you are trying to register for a Demonoid account with an invitation code as well as when you are trying to register during an open signup period. Initially I thought Demonoid had a fixed user limit as in most other private torrent trackers. However this cannot be as the error message is not displayed universally to all users (i.e- Users in some parts of the world are able to sign up while some users continue get the error message). Perhaps Demonoid limits the number of registrations/registration attempts from a certain IP range. Either way, there are several things you can to do get around this problem:

1. If you have a dynamic IP, change your IP address and try signing up with the new IP. Usually disconnecting and reconnecting your internet connection will change your IP address.

2. Use a proxy site or an anonymization service to access Demonoid. Simply type http://www.demonoid.com in the text field where you have to enter the target web site and begin browsing. If it does not work with one site, try using another. I tested this method using www.anonymouse.org and it worked just fine. Demonoid’s FAQ does not say anything against the use of proxy sites so I guess it’s within the rules to sign up via a proxy. Below are a list of articles where you can find some good proxy sites and anomymization services:

Hope this solves your Demonoid registration problems.

P.S- Demonoid invivation code giveaway number 12 will be posted in a few more hours! Keep checking our homepage or giveaways section.

Remove advertisements in AIM using AIM Ad Hack

We recently posted about the A-Patch which allows you to remove advertisements in Windows Live Messenger. Here is a similar application that can remove advertisements in AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Not only can it disable ads but it can also remove unwanted software such as Viewpoint Media Player and WildTangent which come bundled with some AIM installations.

AIM ad hack functions similar to A-Patch. First you get to select which options you want to apply. Then all you have to do is it patch AIM with the press of a button. This is a one time thing and then you can forget about it altogether (no need to keep the hack running in the background). No one really likes ads on their IM so we hope you’ll find this little application pretty useful.

The download link to AIM Simple Cloner is also included. AIM simple cloner is a software that you can use to run multiple instances of AIM (Polygamy).

How to update Kaspersky, Mcafee, Norton and other anti-virus software offline

It’s a well known fact that you need to have your Anti Virus software up to date in order to be protected from latest viruses and other malware. Most security software vendors tend to provide updates over the internet. But what if you have a computer that is not connected to the internet or is having limited internet connectivity (low bandwidth, data cap, etc)? This article describes how you can update your Anti Virus software manually using offline definition updates.

Although most Anti Virus software have a built in automatic updates feature, vendors tend to release standalone update installers usually through their official website. Once you download one of these offline installers, you can use it to update virus definition files even on Anti Virus software installed on computers without internet access (Ex- Download offline installer from work computer which has internet access and then use the installer to update home computer which is not connected to the internet). How to run DOS games and applications on Windows Vista, Linux, and Mac OS X using DOSBox

I started gaming back in 1993 on a computer which had a 40MHz processer and ran MS-DOS. Over 15 years have passed and I still love those old DOS games which I used to play back then. Unfortunately, most modern OS such as Windows Vista does not include native MS DOS support – you’ll get error messages if you try to run DOS games or apps on such operating systems. This is where DOSBox comes in – DOSBox is an MS-DOS emulator which will help you run all your favorite DOS games and applications on Windows Vista, Linux, Mac OS X and a number of other operating systems.

dosbox logo

If you are currently using Windows Vista, whenever you try to run a DOS game or an app the following error will be displayed: “This system does not support fullscreen mode. Choose ‘Close’ to terminate the application”. If you ignore it an continue, another error is likely to follow and the program will shut down. With DOSBox around, you will have to face no more of this nuisance.

How to download and configure DOSBox

  1. Download DOSBox from the official download page.
  2. Once the download is complete, run the installer and install DOSBox.
  3. Now you need to move your DOS games and applications to a single directory. For example, create a directory C:\DosGames and move all your DOS games under that directory. (It’s better to place each game in a separate subdirectory Ex- C:\DosGames\Dave\…, C:\DosGames\Prince\…, etc)

Note: Steps 4-9 is based on the assumption that your dos games directory is C:\DosGames. If you used another directory, change the commands accordingly.
  4. Run DOSBox. Type the following command in DOSBox command prompt:
    mount c C:\DosGames
  5. Now you will be able to navigate to C:\DosGames directory using standard DOS commands and run any game placed inside that folder. If you have forgotten DOS commands, read on.
  6. Type C:\ and press enter in the DOSBox console.
  7. Type DIR and press enter. A list of subdirectories in the DosGames folder will be displayed.
  8. You can browse to any subdirectory in the DosGames folder using the cd command. Ex- to browse to Dave directory simply type:
    cd Dave and press enter.
  9. Once you are in the game directory, type the game executable and press enter to play. This executable can be found using the DIR command.
