DirectX Runtime 9.29.1962 (June 2010) Standalone, Offline Installer

Here’s a very important update for video gamers, 3D artists or anyone else who use programs that communicate with Microsoft DirectX API (this includes watching video as well). The latest DirectX monthly runtime is here and it’s a recommended upgrade for everyone running Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista or Windows XP Service Pack 3. If you are wondering how this redistributable package differs from the web installer that’s provided on Microsoft download center, this is a standalone setup that does not involve any over-the-web file downloading. It can even be run on environments without internet connectivity. In other words, this is basically the DirectX setup you get bundled with latest PC games.

directx-logo_thumb%5B3%5D%5B1%5D_thumb%5B5%5D[1]

This redistributable installer contains all latest as well as previously released DirectX runtimes. This includes the bi-monthly D3DX, XInput, and Managed DirectX components. Upon execution, setup will inspect your system’s current configuration and update it with the latest DirectX runtime components  - only the files that are out of date will be updated and sometimes you won’t even need to restart the machine. It’s a very simple process really.

Download

You can download the installer directly from Microsoft download center. We have included both the direct download link and the MS Download Center download page below:

Manage Multiple Remote Desktop Connections With Microsoft RDCMan

If you work with multiple remote desktop connections simultaneously, here’s a software that’ll make your life easier. RDCMan (Remote Desktop Connection Manager) is a tool from Microsoft that will let you easily connect and manage several remote desktop sessions at once. This can be a useful tool for network administrators as well as for software developers who need to deploy and test applications on multiple machines. RDCMan is a small download which is sized around ~750KB and the app is distributed as freeware. I haven’t had a lot of time to test drive this app but it looked like a solid piece of software with no showstopper bugs during the short period of time I used it.

RDCMan Screenshot

First thing you’ll want to do after installing RDCMan would be to create and save a new group. You can do this through the File menu. Then, you can start adding servers to the group, create sub groups, etc. The interface is not the most user friendly but since the app is not targeted at novice users, this wouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Download

You can download this software free from Microsoft Download Center. If you use a relatively older operating system such as Windows XP or Windows 2003, you’ll  need to obtain version 6 or newerof the Remote Desktop Connection client software.

Dual Display Mouse Manager – Improve Mouse Movement Between Multiple Monitors

Nowadays a lot of people who work extensively with computers tend to use more than one monitor. According to my experience, having two monitors instead of one huge ass display can help you work smarter and increase productivity. Setting up multiple monitors on a Windows environment is almost a no brainer (provided that your video card supports it) - however there are some common gripes associated with this setup. One of the most common annoyances (for me at least) when working with two monitors is the speed which the cursor moves from the edge of one monitor to the other. For example when you try to access a UI control (i.el. scrollbar) located at the edge of the first monitor, you might suddenly find the mouse pointer had skipped the edge and moved to monitor no. 02. Thankfully, Dual Display Mouse Manager is a small piece of software that can cure this disease once and for all.

Dual display mouse manager

Dual Display Mouse Manager smoothens the cursor movement between monitors by inserting a small delay when the pointer approaches the edge of one monitor. This stops the cursor ‘skipping’ and makes it easier to work with elements closer to the edge of a display. You can customize this behavior using the app’s simple interface and tweak it for your liking – however I found the default values to work perfectly. Another feature of DDMM is the ‘mouse region jump’ – this lets you map the ctrl key to switch mouse pointer between monitors instantly.

Download

DDMM is free, portable software and does not require installation. It however does require Microsoft .NET framework to function (which comes pre installed with most modern versions of Windows).

Find All Details Of An IP Address Using IPNetInfo Desktop Utility

If you want to find additional details pertaining an IP address such as owner name and the country it’s registered on, you’d usually use an online service to retrieve the information. But unbelievably lazy folks among us (such as me) would prefer the use of a desktop application to get the job done with a single click – you type in the IP and the program returns the information – no browser involvement, no ads, nothing. IPNetInfo is a simple Windows application that can do just that. It can retrieve a host of information related to a single or multiple IP addresses instantly. The application is free, lightweight, does not require an installation (portable) and works with all Windows versions from Win 98 to Windows 7.

IPNetInfo

If you are curious to know how this piece of software works, an explanation is given in the app homepage:

The IP address information is retrieved by sending a request to the whois server of ARIN. If ARIN doesn't maintain the information about the requested IP address, a second request is sent to the whois server of RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC or AfriNIC.
After the IP address information is retrieved, IPNetInfo analyzes the Whois record and displays it in a table.

As an end user you’ll only see the final, formatted information organized into columns.

Another useful feature of this application is it’s ability to extract IP addresses from full Email headers. You might have received suspicious Emails claiming they were from a reputed service provider such as Google. IPNetInfo can help you verify the legitimacy of such emails – just paste the email header into the app and it’ll display detailed information about sender IP.

Download

Believe it or not this software comes in an archive file that’s only 48kb in file size.

WSUS Offline Updater - Update Windows 7 & Office 2007 Without Internet

To keep any version of Windows up and running, Windows Updates are essential. From security patches to compatibility updates, Microsoft frequently releases fixes to keep its operating systems running smoothly. However to use the Windows Update tool that comes bundled with the OS, an internet connection is a pre-requisite on every machine you run it on. Additionally, since there are no installation files, you cannot download updates to hard disk and re-use them later on or run them on different machines if you have more than one PC. WSUS Offline Update is an application that can help you in such cases – it’s an automatic updates downloader with advanced features and supports Windows XP/Vista/7 and Microsoft Office XP/2003 and 2007 products.

If you’ve used other updater utilities such as AutoPatcher and Windows Updates Downloader, you’ll find the usage of WSUS to be a little different. At first it may look a little confusing but it’s just a simple two step process. First you need to download the latest update patches to your hard disk from Microsoft Update servers – this can be done by executing the UpdateGenerator.exe file . You can customize the required updates depending on the OS Version, Language, etc.

WSUS Downloader

During this step you can specify the distribution medium – WSUS can create ISO images that contain all updates or it can copy the downloads to a USB stick so that you may executed them later, on any machine (even on those without internet).

Second step involves applying downloaded update patches. This is very easy and is usually a one click process. If you created an updates ISO on step 1, mount the image and locate the file UpdateInstaller.exe. Run it and you are done. If you copied the updates to a USB stick (or to any folder on hard disk), browse to the location and execute UpdateInstaller.exe.

Again it may not have the most user friendly interface but this is quite a powerful application. If you manage a computer network, have more than one PC or if you are on a low bandwidth or limited internet connection, this could be an extremely handy app to have. And the fact that it supports Windows 7 and Office 2007 adds even more value.

Download

WSUS Offline Update is a free software. Latest version (v6.3) is only 1MB in file size.

Find Your GPU’s Capabilities and Perform Benchmarks With GPU Caps Viewer

These days everyone owns a fancy Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) however only a few really know what their video card is really capable of. For example, a high end PC game may require a specific version of PhysX or OpenGL/OpenCL compatibility to function but very few seem to be aware if their graphics hardware meets such requirements (as evident in our PC Games Troubleshooting articles). GPU Caps Viewer is a lightweight utility that can help you in such cases. It can display detailed information about what your GPU can really do ranging from renderer/clock details to temperature. You can also use it as a benchmark tool thanks to the number of demos that come bundled with the software.

GPU caps viewer

Among other things, GPU Caps Viewer can check if your video card has CUDA support, PhysX support and OpenCL/OpenGL support. It can also display a full list of OpenGL extensions supported by the GPU when applicable. Apart from technical details, the software also lists sites with reviews of your GPU, driver downloads, tweak guides and more (these are accessible from the Tools tab). Last but not least you can use GPU caps viewer as a benchmark utility using the OpenGL/OpenCL demos that come with it (these can be launched from the drop down menu above ‘Quit’ button.)

Download

The software of course is free and is only 3.5MB in file size.

FixWin – Repair damage caused by viruses, registry changes and more

No matter what sort of protection you have, some viruses or malware may at some point get past your defenses. Hardest part about getting rid of these fukers is not the removal itself, but undoing the damage and changes they made to the system. For example, AntiVirus software will remove the viruses and their traces completely in most cases but very few will actually undo the registry changes made to the system. Ever ended up with a disabled task manager, hidden folder options dialog, missing optical drives, windows explorer errors, malfunctioning windows components and other similar annoyances? If so, FixWin is a software that you might want to try.

FixWin

FixWin offers a number of one click fixes to common Windows problems such as the ones mentioned earlier. Fixes are categorized across several sections; Windows Explorer, Internet & Connectivity, Windows Media, System Tools and other Fixes. In total there are around 50 fixes listed. Best part about this software is that it supports newer Windows versions such as Windows 7 (there are several Win 7 specific fixes listed such as Areo Snap, Peek and Aero Shake not working, etc).

FixWin itself is a portable application. You do not need to install it – just run the exe and you are good to go. Additionally, it’s free, only 500kb in file size and is well worth the download. Check it out.

Use Google Translate From Windows Desktop - AIRTranslate

Here on FILEnetworks, Google Translate is a tool that we use almost everyday. For example when it comes to translating text from foreign private torrent trackers, it helps us greatly. Just like us, I’m sure most of our readers use this web service  their translation needs. If you do, here’s an application that you might find interesting. AIRTranslate is a piece of software that allows you to use Google Translate right from your desktop – with no browser involvement at all. With this app installed, you won’t need to fire up the browser and visit translate.google.com whenever you want something done.

AIRTranslate

As you can see from the above screenshot, AIRTranslate pretty much offers everything Google’s online service has to offer. This includes translation between the 50+ languages supported by the service, language auto detection and clipboard content detection. Although there is no browser involvement, AIRTranslate requires internet access to perform translations (obviously :p ).

You may have guessed this already - AIRTranslate is built on the Adobe AIR platform. It’s a relatively lightweight app (around 25MB physical RAM taken when run on Windows 7, setup file is around 750kb) and does not clutter your system with additional services, startup entries and such. You will need to have Adobe AIR installed (download from here) to install and run AIRTranslate.

Automatically translate subtitle files with Open Subtitle Translator

If you download subtitles for downloaded movies and TV shows, you might have run into the following scenario – the subtitle you are looking for is available but it’s in another language. Needless to say its frustrating when this happens as you’ll have to wait for someone to upload the correct file which could take maybe several days or may (that is, IF someone uploads it at all). Open Subtitle Translator is a handy tool to have in such situations – it’s a small program that can automatically translate a subtitle file from one language to the other. Note that Translation services are powered by Google Translate and you’ll need an internet connection to make it work.

Open Subtitle Translator

The application is written in Java and usage is quite simple. First you need to set the translation language preferences via the Options menu. After that, all you need to do is to load a subtitle file into the app and hit ‘Start Translate’ button. Open Subtitle Translator will translate the file line by line and display results in real time. Once you are done, you can save translated stream as a separate, new subtitle file. Note that sometimes I had to select all lines (Ctrl + A) before hitting ‘start translate’ to get the app to work properly.

Note that this is not a perfect solution. Translation is done by a machine and even Google won’t be able to interpret the meaning of some phrases correctly. Anyway it’s an interesting tool – you can easily check it out as the app does not even require an installation

Download

This software is free and is not bundled with adware or any form of malware.

Silverlight based subtitle search engine from Sublight

About two weeks ago we posted about Sublight, a desktop software to automatically download matching subtitles for downloaded movies and TV shows. Developers of Sublight have come up with a new project, this time a web application developed using Microsoft Silverlight. The web based version of Sublight acts very much like it’s desktop counterpart (but with some limitations) – it’s primarily a subtitle search tool/downloader that is fully online. So what makes it different from hundreds of similar services already available?

Silverlight web

Unlike most Subtitle search engines and repositories out there, web based version of Sublight does not make users go through several pages to download a subtitle. Searching, selecting and downloading can all be done via a single interface, without interruptions. Languages can be filtered and options are available to optimize search with information such as year, season number and episode number (for TV shows), etc. All in all it’s a good alternative to those who dislike installing additional apps to fulfill simple tasks such as subtitle search.

Note that you’ll need the Microsoft Silverlight browser plugin for this to work. Also keep in mind that this is a very early version of web based Sublight – bugs may exist.

Save your Windows updates and install them offline with WUD

About two years back, there was a nice little application called Autopatcher. Autopatcher was similar to an offline version of Windows Update – it was a 3rd party setup package which contained all updates released by Microsoft. Needless to say, this was a huge hit among the Windows community. But then Microsoft spoiled the party by sending Autopatcher a ‘Cease and Desist’ notice which hampered the project. Windows Update Downloader is a similar utility that automatically retrieves updates from Microsoft and allows users to re-use the downloaded files. The next time you reinstall Windows, you won’t have to download and install every update from scratch (which is painful btw).

Windows Updates Downloader

Windows Updates Downloader gets latest available update information from Update Lists (ULs). Regularly updated ULs can be found on WUD homepage. Once you get an update list, WUD allows you to download all or selected updates in it to your computer. Once the downloads are complete, you are able to integrated downloaded updates to your Windows installation using a tool such as nLite.

This tool should be useful for those who frequently install/reinstall Windows. In addition, it’ll save you a lot of bandwidth if you have multiple computers running Windows (you can use the same disk to update multiple PCs).

Download

A new version of WUD (v2.50) was released a few days ago. It features fixed service pack support and other minor updates. You can download this free piece of software from app homepage.

Volumouse – Use the mouse wheel to adjust sound volume

I don’t know about you but I’ve always wanted to do this, and I’ve found the perfect utility to do it. Volumouse is a simple but useful utility that lets you control system sound volume with your mouse wheel. The best part about it - your mouse wheel not only be limited to volume control. The application lets you define when exactly the mouse should control the sound volume. For example,  you can tell the application to adjust volume when alt key is pressed - in all other cases mouse wheel will be used for regular functions such as web page scrolling etc. Volumouse is a product of Nirsoft – it’s completely free and is not bundled with any unwanted cr@pware.

Volumouse

As you can see from the above screenshot, you can hand over volume control to mouse even for specific scenarios such as ‘Windows media player is focused’. You can set one to five of such conditions. Further customizations can be made to the way volume is altered. You can fine tune these settings and trust me, you’ll love it once you get used to Volumouse.

Volumouse is totally free and is only 115kb in file size.

Remove artwork and cleanup NFO files with Advanced NFO Stripper

If you’ve been downloading scene and p2p releases, you should be no stranger to .NFO files. NFO files contain vital release information such as instructions, serial keys, release group info, release description, etc and are almost always included with any software, game or other releases. You might have noticed that most NFOs contain a lot of ASCII artwork – specially for the group logo. Sometimes, this can be annoying. Don’t get me wrong, ASCII art, cracktros and chipmusic is part of what makes the scene cool. But what if you only needed the information in the NFO file, sans the artwork? This is where Hexagon’s Advanced NFO Stripper comes in.

Hexagon NFO Stripper

Advanced NFO Stripper is a free online service that’ll automatically remove all artwork from a given NFO file. You can either upload your file to the service or just give the URL if it’s hosted online. NFO Stripper homepage features up to date usage statistics which suggest that it’s a quite popular service:

All Time Stats:

Stripped NFOs: 73,476
Lines Removed: 6,567,910
Characters Stripped: 474,251,334
Time Used Stripping (Seconds): 3438.52535224
Average Reduction: 68.35%

-stats as of 13/10/2009

I don’t exactly know how the stripping engine works (whether it searches for lines composed with non English chars and removes them or if it uses algorithms to match character patterns commonly used in scene artwork). Either way it worked perfectly fine with the 4-5 NFO files I used to test the service. Artwork was removed and information was retained. Pretty cool stuff indeed.

DirectX 9 August 2009 Runtime - Standalone, Offline, Redistributable Installer

Here is some important news for gamers (or for anyone who’s using software that makes use of Microsoft’s DirectX API) – the latest monthly DX runtime is here and it’s strongly recommended that you update to this version ASAP. DirectX 9 August 2009 runtime (v9.27.1734) is the first monthly update after March 2009 edition which was released about 6 months ago. This will of course be a must have update for Windows XP users as the operating system does not support DX10 and all games will run on DX9 mode by default.

Although many people are unaware, the all too common missing dll errors when trying to launch new games (ex- missing d3dx9d.dll , d3dx9_25.dll, missing d3dx9_27.dll, etc) are mostly caused by an outdated DirectX version. Installing the latest DX runtime update should easily rectify such problems as well.

Download

As mentioned in the title, this post features the full standalone, redistributable version of DX9 August 2009 runtime – this is not a web setup. You can download the file directly from Microsoft’s official servers.

Shorten URLs From Windows Desktop Using MURL

It was only a couple of years ago when TinyURL was everyone’s favorite URL shortener. Things have changed rapidly over the past couple of months and now there are tons of these services – some a lot better than TinyURL (this growth was no doubt fuelled by Twitter and it’s 140 character limit). The likes of bit.ly and is.gd have revamped the URL shortener segment and now almost everyone on the net probably uses one of these services. But have you noticed that every time you want a URL shortened, you have to visit the service’s web page? For the lazy asses who don’t want to do this, here is a desktop application that’ll shorten the URL for you, with no browser involvement :)

MURL

MURLS (short for Multiple Uniform Resource Locator Shortener) is a windows desktop application that can generate shortened versions of any given URL. It supports not only one but 26 different URL shorteners. You get to choose which services to use and if you tick 20 different services from the settings dialog the application will generate 20 links (see above screenshot) in a matter of seconds (although I can’t possibly imagine why anyone would want more than one short link for any given URL).

A downside of using this app would be the unavailability of web based features offered by various such services. For example, you won’t be able to use Bit.ly’s click tracking features with this utility.

Download

MURLS is free, portable and easily downloadable (only 300KB in size).

[Click Here] to visit MURLS download page on Google code

There is also a link to a command line version which I didn’t try.

Remove and uninstall all Norton products with Norton Removal Tool

If I was told to choose between Norton AntiVirus and an actual virus, I’d rather have the virus infect my PC. Norton Antivirus used to be a decent security product several years back but now it’s just another piece of bloatware that slows your PC down just like most malware infections out there (it does have good detection capabilities though). Same goes for Norton Systemworks, Norton Utilities, etc – resource consumption of all of these products have increased with each new release, with no notable new features being added. For those looking forward to get rid of Norton products from their systems for good, there is a removal tool which will make things a lot easier.

Norton removal tool

Uninstallers that come with Norton products will remove the installations just fine in most cases. However these might fail when it comes to removing partially installed copies and damaged/corrupted Norton installations. Such cases can be very annoying with you being prompted to restart the computer repeatedly, setup of new versions not being able to proceed, etc. This is where the Norton Removal Tool comes in. It can completely remove damaged copies or partial installs of not only Norton AntiVirus but of SystemWorks, Norton 360, etc as well.

[Click Here] to visit the download page for Norton Removal Tool on Symantect web

Symantec is usually good at creating removal tools for most in-the-wild viruses. Think of this as another such utility – only this time the threat that needs removing would be the Norton app itself :)

EasyUploader – Automatically upload files to Easy-Share from desktop

This post is about a somewhat similar tool to ‘File & Image Uploader’ which we posted about several months back – only difference is that this one focuses on a single one click hosting service. EasyUploader is a desktop application that allows users directly upload files to the popular file host Easy-Share. Version 1.5 (download link below) includes a hot new addition called FTP upload using which you can resume broken uploads. EasyUploader comes with several additional features such as parallel/batch uploading support, proxy support, download link generation, https support, auto shutdown and more.

Easy Share

Note that Easy-Share has a maximum file size limit of 100MB (for free users). If your file’s size exceeds 100MB and if you are a free user, you’ll have to break it down to multiple parts even if you use this application to upload it. Also note that resuming broken uploads is only supported if you use ‘FTP’ method. Before you do any of this you need to go and register for an Easy-Share account (the app works with both Premium and Free accounts). Registration is free and can be done through this link.

DownTester – A desktop tool to test your download speed

I think probably everyone reading this article might have used SpeedTest.Net, an online service which lets you test the speed of your internet connection. Here is a desktop application that is somewhat similar to SpeedTest- DownTester lets you test the download speed between your computer and any other location you specify, including FTP servers. Once you are done testing your internet connection against multiple external servers, results can easily be exported to a text/HTML file. DownTester is lightweight, free and is compatible even with Windows 7. Best part about it is that the app is portable – there is no need to install.

DownTester Image

Note that unlike SpeedTest, DownTester does not provide a list of servers to measure download speed – you have to specify them manually. The following is quoted from app homepage:

DownTester doesn't provide an official list of URLs for the speed test. If DownTester provide a URL list, all users of DownTester will use the same servers, and will eventually overload them.

Here's some instructions about how to choose your download URLs for your speed tests:

  1. First, go to the Web site of your internet service provider, and try to locate the download URL provided for speed test, and if you find it, add this download URL into the list. Many ISP companies provide a download URL for speed test.
  2. Go to the Web sites of large companies and locate some files to download. It's recommended to find files larger than 5 MB in order to insure that the speed result will be accurate. Some Web sites also provide mirrors across many countries, so you can use it to easily add download URLs of other countries.

Actually, there is much more to this application than it meets to the eye. DownTester can be an invaluable asset if you are trying to troubleshoot connection problems – to know more about the advanced uses of this app, I suggest you visit its homepage located here.

Easily read minidump files and find causes for BSOD crashes with BlueScreenView

Here is another excellent system utility from NirSoft. Windows STOP errors or BSOD errors (Blue Screen of Death) is one of the most frustrating issues might encounter with a Windows OS. Not only do these errors mean that something is broken on your machine (let it be software or hardware), they often don’t relay enough information to troubleshoot the issue at hand. However, Windows creates a memory dump usually in the minidump folder whenever a BSOD occurs. These minidump files can hold the key to solving the mystery behind random restarts, random crashes or freezes you might be experiencing with your PC.

BlueScreenView Minidump

If you’ve ever tried to read a minidump file, you’ll know that it’s not exactly a neatly formatted document. This is where BlueScreenView comes in – this program extracts valuable information (stop error code, possibly related file names, bug check string, etc ) from the memory dump and presents it in a more readable format which makes troubleshooting a little more easier.

BlueScreenView Features

  • Automatically scans your current minidump folder and displays the list of all crash dumps, including crash dump date/time and crash details.
  • Allows you to view a blue screen which is very similar to the one that Windows displayed during the crash.
  • BlueScreenView enumerates the memory addresses inside the stack of the crash, and find all drivers/modules that might be involved in the crash.
  • BlueScreenView also allows you to work with another instance of Windows, simply by choosing the right minidump folder (In Advanced Options).
  • BlueScreenView automatically locate the drivers appeared in the crash dump, and extract their version resource information, including product name, file version, company, and file description.

Download

BlueScreenView is free software. It’s not bundled with adware/spyware or any other form of crapware. Please note that this program might not work properly in 64-bit editions of Windows.
