ComicBT Comics Tracker Open For Signup This Weekend Only

It’s awesome news if you are a fan of comic books. ComicBT, a specialized private tracker for downloadable comics, has opened public registrations for three days only. ComicBT is one of those trackers that hasn’t received much publicity or hype from numerous BitTorrent forums and blogs out there. The site started out its operations silently back in last May and within a short span of time it’s become one of the largest dedicated comic book trackers online today. ComicBT now features over 2500 torrents of high quality downloadable comic books (old & new, including scanned versions), a brand new, polished looking skin as well as a small but active community of comic book readers, collectors and enthusiasts. If you are a comics lover you might want to check this site out (and this includes everyone who left invite requests in our last CBT review) – signups will only remain open this weekend, and will close by early Monday (25th).

ComicBT Logo

From it’s humble beginnings, CBT has managed to improve its operations in almost all aspects during the last couple of months. The site now features a shiny new skin, category icons and a logo which gives it a highly polished look and feel. But it isn’t just the looks that have improved – CBT uploaders have been adding a ton of new content too. As of 23/10/2010, ComicBT tracked over 2850 torrents (up from 42 when we last featured this tracker), making it probably the largest specialized comics tracker currently online.

As for the type of content CBT tracks, it’s pretty much straightforward. You can find both new and old issues of almost all major comic book series on this tracker. These usually come in CBR, CBZ or PDF file formats - they are all viewable on the PC and probably even on portable devices such as iPad, provided that you have the required software (for a list of software you can use to view Comic Book Archive files on the PC, look here). In addition to comic books, CBT indexes movies, animation and TV series based on comic book characters as well. A screenshot showing part of its torrent index can be seen below:

ComicBT Screenshot

Aside from the customized theme that resembles the look and feel of a comic book, ComicBT has a bonus system in place and comes with all other standard features TBDEV 2009 codebase has to offer. Note that there are wait times for this tracker.

As mentioned in the title of this post, CBT is currently open for signup. The official notice on site reads:

Open Sign up
Due to me not getting any sleep sign up's are open!  Fri, Sat, Sun
Ends early Monday 25th...

To put it shortly, if you have any interest in comics, comic book characters, superheroes, etc. this is a must have tracker for you. Get in while it’s open.

Z-Cult FM comics torrent tracker – How to download

We’ve posted about many private torrent trackers here on FILEnetworks Blog but this is the first post about a specialized comics torrent tracker. At a glance, Z-Cult FM may not look like a BitTorrent tracker at all. The site’s design implies it to be nothing more than a comics releases and reviews index. However only a few people know that Z-Cult FM indexes and tracks several thousand comic book torrents – a great resource for comic lovers indeed!

z-cult fm tracker comics

Z-Cult FM is quite a large community with over 84000 registered members (the number of active members may be lower). The exact number of torrents tracked by Z-Cult’s BitTorrent trackers is unknown. Most of the comic books that can be downloaded comprise of scanned .jpeg images packed into Comic Book Archive (.CBR, .CBZ, etc) file formats (how to open). Visual quality is usually excellent on these releases.

There was a time when DCP and Marvel comics were removed from this tracker due to legal threats. These releases can now be found on the site once again but they are no longer hosted nor tracked by Z-Cult. Instead, .torrent files for DCP/Marvel comics are stored and tracked by ComicPirates tracker (http://comicpirates.info). Z-Cult merely indexes these releases which are usually posted by the ‘Comic Pirates release bot’.

How to unlock the BitTorrent trackers section and download torrents from Z-Cult FM

Z-Cult FM homepage can be found at http://www.zcultfm.com/. This is merely a index that shows latest comic book releases. There are no torrents here so you can stop looking for torrent links beneath each comic book post. A new visitor to the site will only see a reviews section and a discussion forum for comics releases. But that is not all Z-Cult FM is about:

comics pirates releases

To unlock the BitTorrent trackers section on Z-Cult FM, follow the steps below:

  1. Visit the Z-Cult FM forums located at http://www.zcultfm.com/~comic/
  2. Register for a new account using the ‘register’ option (http://www.zcultfm.com/~comic/profile.php?mode=register)
  3. Verify and login with your newly created account. You will still not be able to view the torrents section – you need to post at least 1 forum post.
  4. Head to the ‘Introduce Yourself’ section. Make a post there to get your post count to 1.
  5. Now go back to the main index. Scroll to the bottom of the page to find the ‘Cult Torrent Section’ and ‘Cult Direct Download Links’ forums :)

Latest comic torrent releases can be found under ‘Newest Submissions” category in Cult Torrent Section. RapidShare and other one click hosting links to comics can be found in ‘Cult Direct Download Links’ section. Use the search feature if you are looking for a particular release.

How to open & view .CBR, .CBZ, .CB7, .CBT and .CBA files (Comic Book Archives)

If you’ve been downloading comics books from the internet, you may have come across some strange file extensions such as .CBR, .CBZ, .CB7, .CBT and .CBA. These are basically comic book archives. Each page of a comic book is stored in a JPEG or a TIFF file and a collection of such pages are encapsulated in a single archive. None of these file types can be opened in Windows by default. But with the right software installed, you can view comic books right from your computer.

Open with regular archive handling software

Although these files have odd looking extensions, they are compressed using standard file compression algorithms such as ZIP, RAR and ACE. See the table below for more information:

Comic book archive Format Actual compression used Software
CBR RAR WinRAR [Download]
CBZ ZIP WinZip [Download]
CB7 7-ZIP 7-Zip [Download]
CBT TAR WinZip [Download]
CBA ACE WinRAR [Download]

Note that you can use any software that supports the actual compression to open a particular file type (not just the ones mentioned in ‘software to open’ column). Do not rename any of the archives to actual format. Just open the archive handling software, browse to .CBX file and choose to open it from within the program.

Open with special comic book reader software

In addition to the compression utilities mentioned above, there are comic book reader software which are specifically designed to open and view cbr, cbz and other file formats. Such software usually feature file type association, support for rotation, zoom, multi page view and other viewer enhancements, etc. Mentioned below are two of the most popular comic book reader software that are currently around.

All Gaul is divided into three parts. No, four — for one small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the Roman invaders....

The Adventures of Asterix is a series of comic books by René Goscinny (stories) and Albert Uderzo (illustrations). The series follows the exploits of a village of ancient Gauls as they resist Roman occupation. They do so by means of a magic potion, brewed by their druid, which gives the recipient superhuman strength. This is often used for comic effect, as in a recurring sequence where the villagers sally forth from their village to rout the attacking Romans so easily as to consider it great sport. In many cases, this resistance leads the main characters to travel to various European countries (but also Egypt, America, India and other non-European locations) in every other book, while the remaining are set in and around their village.

G.I. Joe Comics : 2003-2008 releases torrent

This is an extension to our previous post. The torrent featured in this post contains G.I. Joe comics released between 2003-2008 while the earlier contained 1982-2003 releases.

Since its debut in 1982, the comic book history of G.I. Joe has seen three separate publishers and four main-title series, all of which have been based on the Hasbro toyline of the same name. The first series was produced by Marvel Comics between 1984 and 1993, running for 155 issues and spawning several spin-off titles through out the course of its run; the second series was a short-lived run published by Dark Horse Comics in 1996; and the third and fourth series are in current production by Devil's Due (the first 25 issues of series three was published by Image) and also feature several spin-off books.

The Torrent featured in this post contains comics from the following series:

G.I. Joe A Real American Hero v2 26-43
In July 2001, Devil's Due acquired the rights to G.I. Joe and released a four-issue limited series thru Image Comics entitled G.I. Joe (vol. 1), written by Josh Blaylock with John Larter and Steve Kurth as the artists. The title quickly became known to the fans as A Real American Hero Volume 2 (following from Marvel's original series) or G.I. Joe Reinstated (the title of the first four-issue arc). A comics convention special was released before the first issue. Strong sales on the limited series led to it being upgraded to an ongoing series with the publication of a fifth issue and a monthly schedule. The new series picked up seven years after the end of the Marvel Comics series and used elements from the animated TV series.  Devil's Due later broke with Image Comics and took over the publishing of the book.

Arashikage Showdown
A single digest featuring Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow, Jinx, Scarlett, Kamakura, TJBang, Nunchuk and Budo. The martial experts try to recover the secret scrolls of the Arashikage Ninja Clan, to which several of them belong. This book has been considered to be non-canon by fans as it incorporates magical and fantasy elements not present in the main series.

G.I. Joe: Master and Apprentice I & II
These were two four-issue limited series written by Brandon Jerwa. Volume 1 was about how Snake Eyes met and trained his apprentice Kamakura, while Volume 2 focused on Storm Shadow and his apprentice/lover Junko Akita.

G.I. Joe: America's Elite
G.I. Joe: America's Elite, officially entitled G.I. Joe Comic Book Volume 2 on the inside cover, is the current main G.I. Joe title. It started with a "zero" issue and picked up the story one year after the events of the last issue of G.I. Joe: Reinstated. The series features a darker tone and a smaller group of Joes than in Reinstated. The series starts off with the president asking General Joseph Colton, the original G.I. Joe, to be the team's C.O., replacing General Hawk, who was paralyzed in the previous series. Character profiles are provided in the Data Desk Handbook, as well as in individual issues. Joe Casey wrote the first eighteen issues before editor Mike O'Sullivan wrote issues #19 and 20. Mark Powers and Mike Bear became the current writer and penciller on the book with #21. Issue 25 marked the beginning of the 12-issue "World War III" story arc, which Devil's Due is promoting as a major event for the book. The future of the series after issue 36 is uncertain, as Devil's Due's licence with Hasbro expires.

Storm Shadow
This series written by Larry Hama lasted seven issues and focused on former Cobra and G.I. Joe team member Storm Shadow. The series began in May of 2007, and, while not bearing the "America's Elite" subtitle, the events occur in the same time frame as the main series.

Data Desk Handbook
An original one-shot published files for G.I. Joe America's Elite main characters at the launch of the series. The files are presented as computer entries written by General Joseph Colton. Several other files were later published in individual issues of America's Elite, Special Missions and several trade paperback volumes. An updated version in two issues (A-M and [N-Z which is not in torrent]) was released in October and November 2007.

The Hunt for Cobra Commander
This one-shot issue was set in the year between the Devil's Due A Real American Hero series and America's Elite series and featured G.I Joe team member Spirit.

Special Missions
A series of one-shots featuring reservist Joes, and set in different parts of the world. The series bears the subtitle America's Elite.

Declassified
The various Declassified series and one-shots explore the origins of the characters, and are set before #1 of Marvel's G.I. Joe series.

G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers
The second mini-series was a follow-up to the first story. Cybertronian technology has augumented both G.I. Joe and Cobra's forces, who are still fighting each other. During a battle, an accident causes several Joes and members of Cobra to be accidentally transported to Cybertron. The backlash of the accident also pulls several Transformers to Earth as well as scattering them through time.

The third mini-series, entitled The Art of War followed on from the second mini-series, using elements of the first. The new story focused on a reimagined version of Serpentor, in this continuity a cyborg created from the DNA of great warleaders and the mechanical components of Megatron. Inadvertently freed by a Cobra raid, Serpentor journeyed to Cybertron. Now Hawk, Grimlock and the other Autobots and Joes must stop him before he takes the Autobot Matrix of Leadership for himself.
A fourth mini-series consisting of two double-sized issues, entitled Black Horizon, was released in early 2007. After Hawk resigned from G.I. Joe in the wake of the events of "The Art of War", he formed a loose alliance with the Autobots to stop the spread of Cybertronian technology. However, a much bigger threat looms: the serpent cult Cobra-La and the dark god of the Transformers Unicron.

G.I. Joe Reloaded
G.I. Joe Reloaded was an ongoing series published by Devil's Due. The comic featured a more realistic take on the G.I. Joe universe and used altered versions of the main characters. Snake-Eyes is Storm Shadow's half-brother and a former Cobra agent, the African-American woman Carla "Doc" Greer is G.I. Joe's field medic as opposed to the character Carl "Doc" Greer from the main comic universe, and one of the Joes is an undercover Cobra agent who betrays the group. The series was preceded by the Cobra Reborn and G.I. Joe Reborn one-shots which introduced the main characters and featured the formation of G.I. Joe and the Cobra Organization. The series had no connection to the main comic series and was canceled after fourteen issues due to low sales.

G.I. Joe: Sigma 6
Written for a younger audience, G.I. Joe: Sigma 6 is a six-issue series based on the new G.I. Joe toyline from Hasbro and the animated TV series of the same name. While the stories don't fit into the main comic universe, the characters largely have the same personas: Hawk is commanding officer, Duke is field leader, and there is a connection between the ninjas Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow.

The key to the success of the series is that it contains comic elements for all ages: young children like the fist-fights and other visual gags, while adults appreciate the cleverness of the allusions and puns that sparkle throughout the texts.
