Transmute – Convert Bookmarks Between FireFox, IE, Chrome, Opera and More

With a sh1tload of different web browsers around, lots of folks tend to use more than one type of app for their day to day browsing needs. If you belong to that category, here’s something that you might find useful. Transmute is an application that allows you to convert between different browser bookmark formats. That is, it allows you to import/export, sync and update your bookmarks across different browsers. It’s actually a quick and easy way to keep your bookmarks organized, up to date and available in all the web browsers you use.

As of now transmute supports a number of different web browsers including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Apple Safari, Chromium, Flock and Konqueror!. There are advanced features such as duplicate bookmark removal and web services bookmarking but those are only available in the Pro version (which is not free :p ). The basic version however is suffice for the average user and has all the core functions you’d expect from Transmute.

The software is lightweight but that’s not what I like most about it. It’s portable (there is a separate build) – you can carry it around in your flash drive or portable hard drive and run on any machine without installation.

ChromePlus – Pimped out Google Chrome

Google Chrome has become browser of choice for many since its initial release back in last September. If you are one of them, here is some news that you might find interesting. ChromePlus is a customized, pimped out version of Google Chrome that adds several extra features that are otherwise unavailable in the original version. Currently there are 5 major additions including mouse gestures in ChromePlus and more are promised with upcoming builds. Best news of all – it’s free and there is no spyware inside. In addition, unneeded Chrome background communications are disabled in ChromePlus.

As we mentioned above, currently there are 5 main features offered in ChromePlus:

You can find more information about these features and how they work, on this page. It’s worth mentioning that all regular features of Google Chrome are also available in ChromePlus.

Note that Google Chrome is known for its speed and reduced usage of system resources. Addition of new features would definitely add to the resource consumption of the app. However I don’t think the difference between original Chrome and ChromePlus’s resource usage will even be noticeable for most users. Anyways it’s an interesting app. Check it out.

Portable FireFox 3.5.2 – Direct Download

Just a day after FireFox 3.5.2 was released to the public, here comes the portable version from PortableApps.com. Portable Firefox is a modified version of the popular web browser that is extremely useful for those who are constantly on the move or work with multiple computers. You can carry this version around in your USB Flash drive (or any other storage medium) along with your saved passwords, extensions, bookmarks and other personal settings. How to fix “The update could not be installed” error in Mozilla FireFox

This has got to be one of the most annoying errors associated with the popular web browser Mozilla FireFox. If FF encounters a problem when an update is being applied, an error message "Software Update Failed. The update could not be installed…” will be displayed every time you try to start the application. I was unfortunate enough to face the issue myself and luckily managed to solve it wihout having to waste a lots of time. If you are encountering the same issue, here are a few things you can try to hopefully get the problem sorted out.

Note: Before you try any of the fixes below please backup your personal settings, bookmarks and saved passwords.

Browse to Start Menu –> Programs –> Mozilla FireFox and right click the FireFox shortcut. Choose ‘run as administrator’ from the menu and execute. If it doesn’t work the first time, try 2-3 times. If FF cannot update due to insufficient user account privileges this should solve it.
Browse to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Mozilla\FireFox\Mozilla FireFox (path is different in Windows XP). Delete the updates directory, updates.xml and active-update.xml files if they are present. Start FireFox. If FF encountered an error during the update process, this should clear the last update and start fresh from the beginning.
If it still doesn’t work, go to Mozilla download page and download the latest version of FireFox. Without uninstalling the existing version, execute the new setup. If the existing version is 3.X/3.5.X, newest version will be installed over the existing installation, clearing any update mishaps.

Internet Explorer 8 Final Standalone/Offline Installer Direct Download Links

Microsoft released the final build of highly anticipated Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) two days ago. IE8 is packed with new features such as smart address bar, session saving, tab groups, CSS 2.1 support, accelerators, web slices, instant search as well as various other reliability and security enhancements. Also, web browsing/loading speeds on IE8 were considerably faster compared to predecessors. It’s definitely a huge improvement over Internet Explorer 7 and perhaps the best IE release yet by Microsoft.

Internet Explorer 8 RC1 Standalone Installer Direct Download Links (XP/Vista/Windows Server)

Microsoft made public the first release candidate (RC1) of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) yesterday. IE8 RC1 includes many new features, enhancements and bugfixes over the previously released builds. If you are willing to give this browser a go, it can now be downloaded free of charge for Windows XP, Vista, Windows Server 2003 and 2008 platforms.

I’ve only had little time to play with IE8 RC1 but it definitely looks like an improvement over Beta 2. Faster loading times, Firefox like address bar, InPrivate filtering and loads of other security and reliability enhancements probably make IE8 RC1 the best Internet Explorer build yet to be released. However there is nothing revolutionary introduced in this release that can make me give up FireFox 3 and become an IE user :P

Portable Firefox 3.0.4, 2.0.0.18 and 3.1 (Beta) Download

Portable FireFox is my favorite portable application. With this app you can take all your Firefox bookmarks, settings, saved passwords and form information wherever you go. It’s a great app to have if you use several different machines to browse the web (home, work, school etc). Another advantage is that Portable Firefox can be used on systems where you do not have the necessary privileges (i.e. – Guest account) to install the regular version. Portable version of Firefox does not require installation or re configuration.

Add your bookmarks and other settings to portable Firefox (it’s a one time thing), put it in your USB flash drive or any portable storage medium and you are good to go. Portable Firefox is included in PortableApps suite which was featured earlier but in this post we have included links to the latest version currently available. Earlier today we reported how Microsoft released Silverlight 2.0 Final. On the same day, Adobe have released the final version of Flash Player 10. Microsoft Silverlight 2.0 Final Download

Microsoft have released the final version of Silverlight 2.0. Silverlight is a web media solution which allows users to create interactive rich media content and deploy them on web sites. Opera 9.60 Final Download

After a number of beta builds, the final build of Opera 9.60 is here. This is somewhat of a major upgrade over older 9.52 builds and incorporates several new features such as feed preview, low bandwidth mode, Opera scroll marker and many more. Mozilla FireFox 3.0.3 released

Mozilla have released a new update for it’s FireFox web browser. The latest update upgrades FireFox to version 3.0.3. This comes rather quickly after 3.0.2 update and fixes a critical bug where users were unable to retrieve saved passwords or save new passwords.

Google Chrome 0.2.151.0 [Portable Edition]

As most of you will already know, Chrome is the web browser developed by search giant Google. I wouldn't say Chrome is as feature rich as FireFox just yet but let's all not forget it's still in beta. Knowing Google, it's likely that this app will stay in beta for a long time (remember Gmail?) and during this time we can hope that more featured will be added, existing ones will be optimized and unwanted ones be removed.

FireFox sets the Guinness world record for the most software downloads in 24 hours

With the release of FireFox 3, Mozilla attempted to set the Guinness world record for for the most software downloads in 24 hours. On the day FF3 it was released (17th June), Firefox 3 registered more than 8 million downloads. The stats and logs were forwarded to the relevant authorities in order to obtain official recognition for the effort.

Apparently, they now have officially set the world record and participants of the Download Day received the following mail today:

" We did it!

We set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloads in 24 hours. With your help we reached 8,002,530 downloads.

You are now part of a World Record and the proud owner of the best version of Firefox yet!

Opera 9.51 Build 10081 Final

There has been a lot of talk regarding FireFox 3 lately which almost made us forget Opera. However the newest Opera version rivals the features of FF3 and in some cases, even offers more.
