DAEMON Tools Lite 4.30.4 with Windows 7 support – Direct download

When it comes to mounting Clone DVD’s of games and software, Daemon Tools is my favorite application. It' doesn’t eat system resources, has minimum compatibility issues and almost always does a perfect job in emulating certain anti piracy protections. A new version of Daemon Tools Lite was released about two days ago with some great new features including support for Windows 7 beta and the ability to create compressed images. This version also includes a new version of SPTD (SCSI Pass Through Direct) – SPTD 1.58.

As far as I know image compression was a feature that was previously included only with Daemon Tools Pro, the paid version. Note that I have not been able to test this on a Windows 7 system so far to check out the new Windows 7 beta functionality. I can however confirm that v4.30.4 works just fine with both 32bit and 64bit editions of Windows XP and Windows Vista (but you already knew that). Anyways given below is the changelog for the new build over 4.30.3:

CDBurnerXP Download – Free CD/DVD/Blu-Ray Burner Software for Windows

CDBunerXP is one of the best free alternatives to Nero Burning ROM. As we’ve discussed before, Nero has become bulky with all the new features added to the suite. If you just want to burn optical disks, CDBurnerXP is the perfect software to have. It can burn CD/DVD and Blu-Ray disks, erase disks (supported disk formats that is), create audio CDs, created mixed mode CDs, burn, convert or create ISO image files and basically everything else you’d expect from a standard Burner software.

Nero 9 Lite – Lightweight edition of Nero with only essential components

About two weeks ago we reported about the release of Nero 9.2.6.0 Final. This previous article featured the full Nero 9 suite with all Nero applications integrated to it. But a lot of these applications will be useless if you only intend to use Nero as a DVD/CD/Blu-Ray burning solution. If that’s the case, why waste your bandwidth and valuable hard disk space on a lot of unwanted applications? Try the Nero 9 Lite edition.

Nero 9 Lite edition is a stripped down version of Nero which contains only the applications essential for CD/DVD burning. This includes Nero Burning ROM, Nero Express, Nero DiscSpeed, Nero DriveSpeed, Nero InfoTool, Nero RescueAgent and Nero ControlCenter. The installer of Lite edition is only 60MB as opposed to full version setup which weighs around 200MB. Nero 9 Lite also takes up much less hard disk space when installed.  Applications in this Nero 9 Lite are based on Nero components from v9.0.9.4b.

Convert XViD, DiVX, WMV and other video files to DVD using VSO ConvertXtoDVD 3.3.4.107

If you want your downloaded TV episodes and movies in XViD, DiVX, WMV, AVI and other formats converted and burned into a DVD disk, ConvertXtoDVD is probably the easiest way to do it. Copy and backup DVD to hard drive with DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15

DVD Shrink is one of the most user friendly and least resource consuming DVD backup software. It allows you to backup your DVD5/DVD9 disks to hard drive or any other storage device. With the help of a DVD burning software such as Nero Burning ROM, you can later write these files to an empty DVD disk to create a replica of the original.

One great feature of DVD Shrink is that it’s able to resize and adjust the DVD files on hard disk to fit on the destination disk. If you want to backup copy protected DVD titles with DVD Shrink, use a 3rd party application that can bypass DVD encryption/copy protection such as AnyDVD or DVDFab for best results. AnyDVD HD v6.5.0.3 & AnyDVD 6.5.0.3 – Rip or backup copy protected DVD and Blu-Ray disks

Updated builds of AnyDVD and AnyDVD HD have been released. You should be familiar with these apps by now but if you don’t know, AnyDVD is a software that can bypass many DVD and Blu-Ray copy protection schemes. It’s developed by SlySoft who were the first to crack the BD+ (Blu-Ray) copy protection scheme. When run in combination with DVD ripper applications such as CloneDVD, this is one of the easiest methods to make backups of copy protected/encrypted DVD and Blu Ray disks.

Version 6.5.03 includes support for the new BD+ copy protection system. AnyDVD and AnyDVDHD were also discussed in our previous post located here.

DVDFab Platinum 5.2.2.2 Final – Convert and copy DVD movies

DVDFab is an application which I have come to trust over the years. It’s probably one of the easiest ways to copy, covert and burn copy protected DVDs. DVDFab can successfully copy DVDs protected by CSS, CPPM, RC, RCE, APS, UOPs, ARccOS, RipGuard, FluxDVD and CORE X2 protection mechanisms. Additionally, you can customize copied DVDs, combine DVDs, split DVDs into several disks (ex- 1 DVD9 copied on two DVD5 disks) and burn them all using DVDFab.

Version 5.2.2.2 was released on the 24th of December and it incldues several bugfixes over the previous build (5.2.2.0). If you download a lot of DVDRs from private torrent trackers such as DVDQuorum, The DVD Club, BitHQ or Asian DVD Club, this application could be useful for you.

Nero 9.2.6.0 Final

Here is yet another updated version of Nero – the popular CD/DVD burning and multimedia suite. Official Nero download page has been updated with version 9.2.6.0 and the release is dated 17/12/2008. From the changelog, you can see that the new version mostly features a bunch of bugfixes. A notable new addition is the Nero Live Gadget which allows viewing TV in Windows Vista sidebar.

Nero 9.2.5.0 Final

Here is a little heads up for fans of Ahead software’s Nero multimedia suite. Nero 9.2.5.0 has been released (btw this version is not even listed yet on the official download page). Judging by the version number this looks like somewhat of a major upgrade over previous 9.0.9.4 builds - I cannot confirm that as am  yet to come across an official changelog. Anyways upgrading to the latest build is recommended as it will no doubt contain at least a few security and reliability updates over the older version.

By ‘upgrading to the latest build’ I did not mean upgrading from Nero 6.6 or 7 to Nero 9 but rather to a newer build if you are already using Nero 9. Some people still seem to like Nero 6.6 and Nero 7 better than v8 and v9 because of the suite getting more and more ‘bloated’ with every new major release. It’s actually up to you to decide which version of Nero best matches your needs.

UltraISO is a CD and DVD image editor software. You can create, edit and convert a number of image file formats. One very useful feature I found with this software was that it could edit image files on the fly. Say you want to remove a file from an ISO image; just open it with UltraISO, edit and remove the file and save the image. There is no need to build the image from scratch again. This works the other way too; you can extract selected files from a disk image through UltraISO (something similar to mounting an image). Smart Projects ISOBuster is without a doubt one of the best optical disk data recovery software currently available. I’ve been using it for the past two years and can personally recommend it to anyone in need. IsoBuster can recover data from damaged or scratched optical disks with ease. From older Video CDs and data CDs to modern Blu-Ray disks, IsoBuster supports a wide variety of optical disk formats. Just insert a CD, DVD or a Blu-Ray disk and mount it in ISOBuster. You will get access the disk’s file system, session details and track information. If you’ve been reading FILEnetworks Blog recently, you might remember that we posted about leaked Clone DVDs (Full DVD Images) of games such as Dead Space, NFS : Undercover, Fallout 3 and Red Alert 3. In some CloneDVD releases, it’s actually possible to play the game using a CloneDVD by mounting the image and emulating the copy protection built into the game (This eliminated the need for a crack). When it comes to cracking DVD copy protection schemes, Slysoft is one of the best out there. AnyDVD is actually a Windows driver which allows decryption of copy protected DVDs in real time. This also makes the DVDs region free, allowing them to be played on devices in all parts of the world rather than being limited to the targeted region. AnyDVD HD is a version of AnyDVD which can decrypt Blu-Ray discs. AndDVD is capable of removing Macrovision (Analog), Sony ARccOS, RipGuard, BD+ (on Blu-Ray) and other encryption schemes as of version 6.4 of the software.

Ahead software released the latest version of its digital media software suite, Nero 9 a few days ago. I used to love Nero back in the days of version 6 and 6.6. But since then I feel that the software suite has only got more bloated with each new release. Version 9 is not lightweight by any means but it does introduce several new features. For starters, Nero 9 has support for Blu-Ray burning by default whereas in version 8 it was only available through an additional plug-in which you had to purchase separately. Among other new features are AutoBackup, Gracenotes support, Music Grabber (rip the soundtrack from videos), Nero Showtime with Vista Sidebar gadget and Ad spotter (will detect and remove commercials from TV shows). The regular CD/DVD functions remain almost the same with only UI enhancements over version 8.
