winPenPack – Great Portable Software Collection For Your Flash Drive

Over the years, portable software have become immensely popular among all demographics of computer users. Portable applications do not require installation, do not pollute system registry with junk data and do not leave traces of usage in system memory or hard drive. You may have come across portable software collections such as ‘PortableApps Suite’ – winPenPack is another one such apps suite which groups together a number of portable software in an easy to use package. It comes in many flavors such as 'School, Web, Personal and can prove to be extremely useful for students, professionals and even for those who are using it at home for personal use.

winPenPack is not a new piece of software – it’s been online since 2005 and has been improving and expanding over the last 5 years. By 2010 it has evolved into a massive collection of portable software with over 50 apps now included in the suite. winPenPack includes two types of software; true portable apps and X-software. Some of the apps included in the suite are real portable builds and do not require external assistance to run. Then there is X-software – these are not special portable builds but portability is achieved by running them in a forced mode. This is easily done through X-Launcher, a freeware utility developed by winPenPack crew. This way you get to run non portable software such as Miranda IM, Notepad++, OpenOffice.org, VideoLan, etc in a ‘virtual’ portable mode.

winPenPack suite comes in several different versions:

• 2GB – The version with the most number of portable software. Almost everything is included.
• Essential – Minimal version of the suite which includes only the essential apps.
• Game – Includes portable games
• School – Includes applications geared towards students – great for use at school, university, etc.
• Web – Applications required for web surfing, instant messaging, etc
• Personal – Set of applications for those who are using the suite at home

DownTester – A desktop tool to test your download speed

I think probably everyone reading this article might have used SpeedTest.Net, an online service which lets you test the speed of your internet connection. Here is a desktop application that is somewhat similar to SpeedTest- DownTester lets you test the download speed between your computer and any other location you specify, including FTP servers. Once you are done testing your internet connection against multiple external servers, results can easily be exported to a text/HTML file. DownTester is lightweight, free and is compatible even with Windows 7. Best part about it is that the app is portable – there is no need to install.

Note that unlike SpeedTest, DownTester does not provide a list of servers to measure download speed – you have to specify them manually. The following is quoted from app homepage:

DownTester doesn't provide an official list of URLs for the speed test. If DownTester provide a URL list, all users of DownTester will use the same servers, and will eventually overload them.

Here's some instructions about how to choose your download URLs for your speed tests:

1. First, go to the Web site of your internet service provider, and try to locate the download URL provided for speed test, and if you find it, add this download URL into the list. Many ISP companies provide a download URL for speed test.
2. Go to the Web sites of large companies and locate some files to download. It's recommended to find files larger than 5 MB in order to insure that the speed result will be accurate. Some Web sites also provide mirrors across many countries, so you can use it to easily add download URLs of other countries.

Portable FireFox 3.5.2 – Direct Download

Just a day after FireFox 3.5.2 was released to the public, here comes the portable version from PortableApps.com. 3DP Chip 9.03 Beta 20 – Automatic driver updates downloader

We first posted about 3DP Chip about two months ago. Since then the article has been referred to in a number of our PC game troubleshooting posts – it’s been pretty damn useful. This is to inform you that a newer build of 3DP Chip is now available for download. For those of you who don’t know what it is, 3DP Chip is a software that can be used to automatically search for new driver updates for your motherboard, video card, sound card, Ethernet adapter and processor.

One of the best things about 3DP Chip is that it does not require an install – the application is portable and doesn’t install any unnecessary system files or startup entries. Just run the small 450kb executable and you will be presented with a list of hardware installed on your system. A single click on the ‘Driver’ button next to a specific device will present you the download link for the latest available driver update for that device. It’s pretty cool.

Portable Firefox 3.0.4, 2.0.0.18 and 3.1 (Beta) Download

Portable FireFox is my favorite portable application. With this app you can take all your Firefox bookmarks, settings, saved passwords and form information wherever you go. It’s a great app to have if you use several different machines to browse the web (home, work, school etc). Another advantage is that Portable Firefox can be used on systems where you do not have the necessary privileges (i.e. – Guest account) to install the regular version. Portable version of Firefox does not require installation or re configuration.

Add your bookmarks and other settings to portable Firefox (it’s a one time thing), put it in your USB flash drive or any portable storage medium and you are good to go. Portable Firefox is included in PortableApps suite which was featured earlier but in this post we have included links to the latest version currently available. AIMP 2.50 Build 306 [Portable Edition]

AIMP is a audio player application you might want to check out. It somehow reminds me of Winamp (good old Winamp 2 that is) with it’s plug ins support, cool looks and high audio quality. Extract files from any type of archive or setup file using Universal Extractor 1.5 [Portable]

Universal Extractor is a small but useful tool that allows users to extract files from virtually any type of archive. By ‘archive’ we don’t mean a .Zip or a .RAR archive; In addition to support for several dozen compressed file formats, Universal Extractor can even extract files from compiled setup packages such as Windows Installer packages, FEAD optimizer packages (used by Adobe), Microsoft hotfixes and even Nero Image files. Developer Description

Universal Extractor is a program do to exactly what it says: extract files from any type of archive, whether it's a simple zip file, an installation program, or even a Windows Installer (.msi) package. This is still a work in progress, but so far it's proven quite useful and I feel others can also benefit from it.

I should stress that Universal Extractor is not intended to be a general purpose archiving software. It will never replace WinRAR, 7-Zip, etc. What it will do is allow you to extract files from virtually any type of archive, regardless of source, compression method, etc.
The original motivation behind this project was that I wanted an easy, convenient way to extract files from installation packages, such as Inno Setup or Windows Installer packages, without pulling up a command line every time. In the process I got a little carried away and ended up throwing in support for every kind of archive format I possibly could find.

Google Chrome 0.2.151.0 [Portable Edition]

As most of you will already know, Chrome is the web browser developed by search giant Google. I wouldn't say Chrome is as feature rich as FireFox just yet but let's all not forget it's still in beta. Knowing Google, it's likely that this app will stay in beta for a long time (remember Gmail?) and during this time we can hope that more featured will be added, existing ones will be optimized and unwanted ones be removed.
