AudioGrabber 1.83 – One of the best CD Ripper software for Windows

I have come across many CD ripping applications in the last few years and Audiograbber definitely is one of my favorites. This is a great software that allows you to cleanly rip tracks from CD music albums with ease. Note that Audiograbber’s ripping process does not use the computer’s sound card unlike in other similar apps – it copies audio digitally. This leads to much less compatibility issues, increased performance and ultimately results in quality ripped music. Additionally, Audiograbber can normalize audio, remove silence and retrieve music album info from freedb instantly.

You can use an array of 3rd party encoders with this app which will allow you output music to a number of different file types. I suggest you use the LAME MP3 encoder (download here) if you plan to save your tracks in MP3 format – it’s an excellent combination.

Another great thing with this software is that it does not put a single file in your windows directories! No DLL's, OCX's, device drivers, spyware, adware or whatever else that messes up the computer. Not a single entry in the registry or win.ini. If you delete the Audiograbber directory it's all gone, that's it!

Extract audio tracks from FLV, MP4, AVI, 3GP & MPEG files with AoA Audio Extractor

When you work with video files, sometimes the need may arise to separate the audio from video. Record MP3 and OGG Vorbis audio streams to hard disk using StreamRipper 1.64.4

Streamripper is a popular application that’s widely used for recording streaming MP3 and Vorbis (.OGG files) audio to hard disk. There are two versions of this application – one is the standalone software and the other is a plugin for Winamp. Featured in this article is the standalone edition. On the 17th of February 2009, final build of Streamripper 1.64.4 was released - direct download link for this version can be found at the end of this article.

One of the specialties of Streamripper is that it’s able to detect separate audio tracks in a MP3 or OGG Vorbis stream. That is, the program is capable of finding where one track ends and another one begins, automatically. This is done by scanning for silent marks in the audio stream. It’s a pretty useful app that’s been around for nearly 9 years – check it out.

MediaCoder – Extract audio from video files, repair damaged videos, batch convert media files and more

Mediacoder is one of the best audio and video transcoders available for the Windows platform. The software is free, has tons of features and is regularly updated. Mediacoder has many uses – it can convert between several dozen media file formats, repair damaged or partially downloaded video files, extract audio from video files, compress media files and perform many other audio and video related tasks.

Nero 9.2.5.0 Final

Here is a little heads up for fans of Ahead software’s Nero multimedia suite. Nero 9.2.5.0 has been released (btw this version is not even listed yet on the official download page). Judging by the version number this looks like somewhat of a major upgrade over previous 9.0.9.4 builds - I cannot confirm that as am  yet to come across an official changelog. Anyways upgrading to the latest build is recommended as it will no doubt contain at least a few security and reliability updates over the older version.

By ‘upgrading to the latest build’ I did not mean upgrading from Nero 6.6 or 7 to Nero 9 but rather to a newer build if you are already using Nero 9. Some people still seem to like Nero 6.6 and Nero 7 better than v8 and v9 because of the suite getting more and more ‘bloated’ with every new major release. It’s actually up to you to decide which version of Nero best matches your needs.

Convert HD video formats with Xilisoft HD Video Converter 5.1.17.1114

There is no doubt that HD video formats are very popular nowadays (hell, there are entire torrent trackers dedicated to HD content). Here is a nice software for those who work with High definition videos regularly. HD Video Converter 5.1.17.1114 is a conversion app from Xilisoft (who make quite a lot of file converters btw) which supports converting between HD video formats, converting HD video to standard definition (SD) video, converting between general video formats such as WMV, MP4, DivX and even converting between several different audio formats. Like most other Xilisoft apps, HD Video Converter has a simple user interface and even novice users should be able to use it without issues. From what little experience I had with the software (this version is quite new), conversion speeds also seemed to be pretty good.

Combined Community Codec Pack 2008-09-21 (CCCP 17) Download

Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP) is one of the best codec packs out there. In most cases, it’s the only codec you’ll need even if you are a power user. CCCP includes a custom build of FFDShow tryouts which will enable you play back most of the video and audio formats out there (see below for complete list) using your favorite media player application . It also includes VSFilter (a subtitles filter) and optional software to play back media files such as Media Player Classic (MPC) and Zoom Player.

I’ve been using this codec pack for quite a while now and I’ve never looked back since. There are people who install several dozen codec packs on their system thinking it’ll give them maximum compatibility. This is not a good practice and can hinder the performance of your system and lead to conflicts between codecs. If you mainly use your computer to view downloaded TV shows, movies, standard DVDS, Audio CDs, MP3s and the usual stuff, I’d recommend you uninstall every codec pack you have and install CCCP. CCCP is not bloated, fast and supports all major formats including DivX (visit here for Divx Create bundle) and XViD.

Like any other software CCCP is not perfect. Compatibility issues have been reported with recent games such as Fallout 3 and FFDShow codecs but these can easily be rectified by adding the troublesome program to FFDShow’s exceptions list (For step by step tutorial on how to do this, click here). I’ve used the codec pack for more than a year and so far have only had issues with Fallout 3 so incompatibilities are not common. Anyways it’s a thousands times better than most of the codec packs out there and is highly recommended.

Nero Move It 1.0.10.0 – Simply organize, convert, transfer and share your music, videos, and photos

Nero Move It is a new application developed by Ahead software, same folks who develop popular Nero Burning Rom software. Move It is a nice app which allows you to organize, convert, transfer and share your digital media. Say you have plenty of music videos on your HDD. With Nero Move It, you can convert and transfer them to your mobile device (iPod, Mobile Phone, etc) and watch them on the go. If you want, you can submit the videos to online communities such as YouTube and share directly through Move it. You can even collect and organize your digital media collection on your PC using this software. While we blame Ahead for making Nero suite more bloated, I think that Move It deserves to be praised as it is a simple app which does what it claims to do. Go ahead and check it out.

Ahead Nero Burning ROM v9.0.9.4 - Create, Rip, Burn, Copy, Share, Backup and Play

Ahead software released the latest version of its digital media software suite, Nero 9 a few days ago. I used to love Nero back in the days of version 6 and 6.6. But since then I feel that the software suite has only got more bloated with each new release. Version 9 is not lightweight by any means but it does introduce several new features. For starters, Nero 9 has support for Blu-Ray burning by default whereas in version 8 it was only available through an additional plug-in which you had to purchase separately. Among other new features are AutoBackup, Gracenotes support, Music Grabber (rip the soundtrack from videos), Nero Showtime with Vista Sidebar gadget and Ad spotter (will detect and remove commercials from TV shows). The regular CD/DVD functions remain almost the same with only UI enhancements over version 8.

Here is a nice little application for those who often work with audio files. The most important feature I found in this software was it’s ability to transfer audio recordings between different media types (Ex- Tape to Mp3). Enhance your computer's audio playback using SRS Audio Sandbox v1.9.0.4

Here is another nice little application which I've come to like in the past few days. In function, SRS Audio sandbox is a little similar to DFX. Once installed,  your computer's sound card output (regardless of whether you are playing a movie, browsing the web or playing a game) will be sent through the SRS Audio Sandbox, enhancing the sound output.  There are several different presets and speaker configurations to choose from. I've used this application with Windows Media Player 11 (SRS WOW effects turned off) to view downloaded movies which have 2CH audio and surprisingly the sound enhancement was noticeable. Keep it mind though, this will not be the replacement for a good sound card and a decent surround speaker system.

We've seen a lot of converter apps but have never seen anything like this before. With FormatFactory installed, you wont feel the need to have several dozen converter apps installed on your system. FormatFactory allows conversion between multiple file types including audio files, video files and image files. And that's not all it can do; It also comes in with a built in DVD ripper!

The only problem we found with this app in our test installation was that it had somehow automatically detected a language other than English. This was rectified easily by selecting English language from the options menu. Overall this app is a must have if you frequently convert between video, audio or image file types.
