Compare video quality of movie torrents with ‘Screenshot Comparison’

It’s a well known fact that movies leak on BitTorrent all the time. There are hundreds of movie release groups both scene and non scene that specializes in such releases. Sometimes, the same movie may be leaked by various groups with differences in video quality. When this happens it can be quite confusing to find which release has the best video quality – even pirates would like to get their hands on the best that’s available. This is where Screenshot Comparison comes in. It’s an online service that allows users to compare screenshots of different movie releases.

District9 Comparison

The idea behind ScreenshotComparision is pretty simple. Two screenshots (depicting the same scene) taken from two different movie releases are placed on top of each other, on a canvas. When the user hovers mouse cursor over the canvas, screenshot from the first release is shown. On mouse out, screen cap from second image replaces the first [See sample here]. In fact, even the slightest differences in image quality can easily be identified through this method.

Like all services, Screenshot Comparison is not perfect. For example there is no guarantee that you’ll be able to compare between every movie release out there. SC does not automatically pull it’s data as scene and p2p releases are pre’d – the service is entirely user driven. All screen captures and comparisons are submitted by users so what you can compare is limited by this factor. Also, I noticed some caparisons where images did not load or kept displaying the ‘loading’ message forever.

Either way it’s a pretty interesting service. Note that the service’s homepage takes you to the ‘submit’ page where you can submit your own screens and new comparisons. To find what users have already submitted, use the ‘Search’ feature or ‘See all’ from the top toolbar.
