New builds of both OpenOffice.org and OxygenOffice have been released. These are free office automation suites which can be used as alternatives to commercial suits such as Microsoft Office, Corel WordPerfect Office, etc. It seems that there is a lot of confusion among readers regarding the differences between OpenOffice and OxygenOffice. OxygenOffice Professional is an enhanced version of OpenOffice which features security, reliability, performance enhancements as well as some extra content. Both versions are still being actively developed and they apparently have a huge fan base from across the world.
According to Wikipedia article, OxygenOffice features the following enhancements:
- Possibility to run Visual Basic for Application (VBA) macros in Calc (for testing)
- Improved Calc HTML export
- Enhanced Access support for Base
- Security fixes
- Enhanced performance
- Enhanced color-palette
- Enhanced help menu, additional User’s Manual, and extended tips for beginners
Apart from the above list, OxygenOffice suite includes several additional templates, additional samples over 3000 clip art, close to 100 new fonts, and several tools that are not available in OpenOffice suite by default. The core applications such as Writer, Calc, Impress etc are more or less unchanged in both versions.
