Seesmic Look – A Twitter Client & A News Reader

Everyone knows Twitter as a micro blogging tool that let’s you keep in touch of what others are doing. Well, that’s one use of it. As for me, I don’t use Twitter much to update ‘what I am doing’ – instead, I use it as a replacement for an RSS reader. Almost all major services on the net now have Twitter accounts and if you want real time updates, all you need to do is to follow these accounts. If you too are using Twitter both as a micro blogging tool as well as a news reader, here’s the perfect desktop client for you; Seesmic Look. Seesmic Look is optimized for Windows 7 – it’s based on Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and has a kick ass user interface. This software is specifically designed to leverage the power of the real time web – it comes with pre configured news feeds, animated trending topics display plus a lot of other cool features.

When you fire up Seesmic Look for the first time, you’ll notice that it' has a different look and feel than most Twitter clients. On the left pane are your navigation options. These too are named differently than the normal Twitter terminology. Listed below are the available options and the functionality they serve:

  • Inbox – private and public mentions of you, plus replies
  • Social – your Twitter timeline
  • Favorites – favorited Tweets
  • Interests – lets you read various news streams from popular tech blogs, celebrities, news services, etc
  • Channels – pre configured channels
  • Searches – Let’s you search Twitter and displays results in a convenient way

If you are interested about reading news over Twitter, you’ll definitely want to check out the ‘Interests' tab. This has a number of pre configured Twitter feeds in numerous categories. As you can see in the screenshot above, the ‘Tech’ category has feeds of almost all major tech blogs including Techcrunch and Mashable. To read these streams, you don’t even need to follow them using your Twitter account. You can read more about Seesmic Look’s features in the official blog located here.
