Textbook Torrents is a private torrent tracker specializing in.....well...Text Books. Yes, thousands and thousands of text books in electronic form, belonging to various categories ranging from Computer Engineering to Chemistry. The tracker was one of it's kind and was a great resources for students and professionals alike. However the site went offline a few days ago, all thanks to some copyright holders who obviously did not understand how file sharing worked. For detailed information about the downtime and the resurrection, please read this forum post.
We'll quote some important points in the post here as well:
" If you plan to use the tracker, bear in mind that our textbooktorrents.com domain is currently out of service. You can update your own system to pretend that the domain works properly by inserting the following into your hosts file:
85.17.226.223 textbooktorrents.com
If you are running Windows, you can find the file in C:\system32\drivers\etc, and on UNIX-based systems including Mac OS X and Linux it can be found in /etc.
I should point out that this kerfuffle has drained all of our reserve funds. If you have the money, please consider donating to the site. I want to build up at least two months' worth of expenses in case of emergency, and at the moment we have no money with which to pay the server bills due at the beginning of September."
Note: The domain www.textbooktorrents.com may still be unavailable due to DNS issues. Use http://85.17.226.223/ to access the site till these issues are resolved. Also note that you must do the hosts file updating (as explained above) if you want to seed.
All in all Textbook Torrents is back and it looks like they will be here for a long time. Also, if you still haven't joined the site, registrations are open so check it out!
